THE United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration posted a message on its Facebook page today (July 25) calling on people to sign a petition in support of the eight parties in the Pheu Thai-led coalition standing firmly together until the tenure of this group of senators ends in 10 months’ time, Matichon newspaper said.

 

In the message that said “we believe that MPs will listen to the people’s voice” the Thammasat group urged the public to sign their petition for the eight parties to stay together until senators lose their power in joining MPs to vote for a prime minister in May 2024.

 

The unelected senators had abstained from voting or voted against Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat for prime minister and denied a second chance for him to be named one in recent joint House/Senate meetings.

That would mean 10 more months of status quo but then possibly a path to the people's choice.

A good solution, even if there not many people signing it. The action shows that the 8 parties are willing to wait and hold the country back for 10 months because of the senators.. They are the only ones t blame. The industry and businessmen are urging to get a new Government so the pressure will be enormous, although the senators don't care about anything except their power and wealth

So in 10 months time is a new PM chosen by just the 500 elected members of parliament or will there be another batch of 250 appointed senators in the mix?

We will find out when 250 new (and/or reappointed) senators are revealed in their spanking new white dress uniforms in May 2024.

That's a dangerous game to play - the "caretaker Gov" can do whatever for 10 months & screw up the country even further! 

I wonder if such a move, if decided upon by the current 8 party coalition and done with the most absolute & binding of resolutions to do so.......ALL the way, may mitigate predicted negative economic consequences by allowing.....as odd as it may sound.....a certain sense of stability in the markets, at least after a rocky period of uncertainty.

Focus on, and blame for, the cause of it would increasingly be on the whole appointed-senator scam committed by the junta/caretaker govt.....and of course, the senators themselves. 

 

Possible iceing on the cake in my scenario (pipe dream) would be a decision by the constitutional court, made after 4 or 5 months or so, that the above-mentioned scam was in fact unconstitutional and that forthwith the authority of the appointed senate is terminated.....resulting in Pita being made PM.

Perchance to dream.

Legally they can not, but this is Thailand, and who's gonna oppose they do as they like.

This will force PT to show its true colors. Can Thaksin wait another 10 months?

It's explained earlier in this thead:

-Current lot automatically finish May 2024

-Next set of senators comes from: secret nominations / secret vote to get elected

-Next set of senators have NO vote at all in terms of selecting the PM.

I know the rules and that they are changing senators. Why do you think you are the only one with that knowledge?

What I was referring to was the petition and sign campaign, as well as the thought such thing will put off PM vote. 

The PM vote will have nothing to do with that at all. The voting will happen when the Constitutional Court has ruled and when Thailand´s 1%ers decide that should happen.

There will be another batch of appointed senators without the right to vote for the PM.

I like this approach because, although it is not very practical, it would place enormous pressure on the senate which has created this impasse. 

 

The 7 MFP coalition partners had no trouble with MFP's section 112 policy as it was omitted from the MOU and they were expecting to be given cabinet portfoliosby MFP they could make money out of. But now the tide has turned they have all suddenly realised they can't give their support to a coalition that includes MFP.

A good idea although I think we've already been shown PT/ Thaksin's colours during their last period of power and to some extent more recently. 

Can the newly elected MPs take up their seats, either without a PM,  or under a caretaker one? What power and duties does the PM have?

Pheu Thai party list-MP candidate Norawit Lasaeng stated that although the Senate can only be in power for another 10 months, they can still pick a prime minister as a caretaker Senate until a new Senate is formed.

The elected MPs have been certified by EC and given their certifications on June 24. House speaker appointment has been published in Royal Gazette. Parliament was officially opened by the King. First session has convened to elect the PM. The Parliament session has began with the newly elected MPs. The caretaker PM will seat in as the interim PM until a new PM is elected.

Who is the interim PM? And which entity appointed him? Probably the senate.
