Opinion: In bed with the enemy

The news that Pheu Thai is now in an alliance with the Bhumjai Thai Party to form a government should come as no surprise to longtime observers of Thai politics. Machiavellian measures always trumps ideals in this world.

But it does leave a bad taste in the mouth for people who took Pheu Thai at face value over the past few years as they attacked the coalition parties while they were in the opposition. BJT was one of the major targets of their ire and everyone from party leaders to rank and file MPs took turns to criticize their erstwhile enemy.

For starters, BJT isn’t just another political entity; it’s a brand sculpted by Newin Chidchob, the very man who notoriously betrayed Thaksin. This godfather-figure of the BJT once stood with Thaksin, only to deal him a political backstab, a Shakespearean move that left political the former aghast. PT embracing BJT is akin to a lover’s arms around the assassin of their beloved.

"In bed with the enemy"?

It's more like a business partnership. Optimization of profits and power.

it matters not a jot, pt and mfp have a majority in the lower house, once in the door all will change, the junta parties simply don't have the numbers - they were booted by the people

Thailand is the land of compromise

We love them all the same

I was wondering about something like that. Why not after a couple of weeks announce a cabinet reshuffle and bring  in MFP under a similar partner sharing agreement as first intended? Kick out the others. They would have the votes to do whatever they wanted.

I think that can only work if Settha becomes PM and it's the obvious tactic for PT AND MFP that I'm sure the ruling classes would have seen coming.

This is not going to end well for the majority of Thai people or us expats whichever way this goes. IMHO.

I disagree with this assessment.  Thaksin did some things that were illegal and he was called on it.  The only way he could be prosecuted was to take him out of power.

Government and ministers are royally endorsed. No one would dare to cross that LM line.

Could you explain what ending us expats can expect either way?

Mob rule, a coup, Anutin, civil unrest, only my opinion though.

... In all honesty, PT could’ve avoided this charade. Eleven months — a pittance in the grand scale of politics — would’ve allowed the dust to settle, the senate’s power diluted, and democracy’s reign secured...

I agree. The chance to stand for a more clean policy, totally wasted. As always, the will of the voters is completely irrelevant to the actors. Election promises are broken without any scruples. I hope PT voters will remember that.

Bhumjaithai leader, Anutin Charnvirakul, stated that he is confident the Pheu Thai-led coalition has already secured over 250 MPs, ensuring a simple majority in the lower house.

However, he refrained from revealing the identities of other parties that have committed to joining the coalition. He emphasized that it is Pheu Thai's prerogative to make such announcements. Anutin asserted that his party does not endorse the formation of a minority government.

Furthermore, he called upon all MPs and senators to cast their votes in favor of Pheu Thai's PM candidate, Srettha Thavisin, underlining that the coalition opposes any amendments to the lese-majeste law.

Anutin also noted that if Srettha fails to secure sufficient support within the joint parliament, the Pheu Thai Party still has two additional PM candidates who could be considered for the position.

In response to questions regarding the Palang Pracharath Party's conditions if they were invited to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition, party leader Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan said, "We will look at it."

He also declined to answer whether his party is prepared to be in the opposition if no invitation is extended.

Meanwhile, party members have prepared a birthday cake for Prawit as he approaches his 78th birthday on August 11.

I think the 6 former coalition parties (Thai Sang Thai, Prachachart, Seri Ruam, Pheu Thai Ruam Palang, Fair and Plung Sungkom Mai Party) which has a total of 20 seats will join the coalition. Most of the MPs are ex-TRT and being part of the government is a bigger draw than in the opposition. CTP with 10 seats has already indicated that they will join if invited. Thamanat will engineered some cross overs to PTP. The new coalition should be able to exceed the majority 250 threshold.

That clown again:

Palang Pracharath Party member Ruangkrai Leekitwattana has filed a petition against Pheu Thai leader Chonlanan Srikaew regarding his comments, which suggest that his party's campaign against Bhumjaithai before the election was merely one of the techniques employed to secure votes.

The purpose of this investigation is to ascertain whether Chonlanan and the party have contravened electoral rules, particularly the prohibition against using deception to mislead voters with the aim of garnering electoral support.

Yuck.

What will be the status of weed legalization due to this alliance? I want weed legalization kept as it is. Otherwise, I have to buy low quality weed from the motorcycle gangs for higher prices as I was doing pre legalization.
