Poll: Trump could be in big trouble for 2024 if convicted of crimes

So far, the fact that former President Donald Trump has been criminally indicted four times this year has done little to dent his support among Republican voters.

But what if he’s eventually convicted?

new Yahoo News/YouGov poll has found that in that scenario, even some current Trump supporters could start to have second thoughts about casting their ballots for him in 2024.

The survey of 1,665 U.S. adults was conducted from Aug. 17 to 21 — after the news of Trump’s most recent indictment, for allegedly orchestrating a racketeering ring to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, had some time to sink in, but before he surrendered Thursday at the Fulton County Jail.

The results are striking.

A Trump conviction could upend the GOP primary

Asked about their current preference for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, a full 52% of potential Republican primary voters — that is, voters who identify as Republicans or Republican-leaning independents — select Trump. That makes him the party’s undisputed frontrunner, with the next closest candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, trailing by 40 percentage points.

But when the same voters are asked a new follow-up question — “If Trump is convicted of a serious crime in the coming months, who would you vote for in your state’s 2024 Republican primary?” — support for the former president suddenly plummets by 17 points (to just 35%). Support for DeSantis, on the other hand, rises by 8 points (to 20%). Another 17% say they’re not sure (up from 14%). No other candidate gains more than a point or two.

Biden also stands to benefit

Asking registered voters who they would vote for in next year’s general election “if Trump is convicted of a serious crime” produces a similar (though smaller) shift. In that case, support for President Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, holds steady at 47%. But support for Trump falls by 3 points, from 41% to 38%, while the overall number of voters who say they're not sure (9%) or that they would not vote (6%) increases by 3 points.

That gives Biden a 9-point lead.

Majorities of Americans say the charges are 'serious'

For one thing, large majorities of Americans say the crimes he’s been accused of are, in fact, “serious”:

  • Falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to a porn star: 54% serious crime, 34% not a serious crime

  • Taking highly classified documents from the White House and obstructing efforts to retrieve them: 66% serious crime, 20% not a serious crime

  • Conspiring to overturn the results of a presidential election: 70% serious crime, 17% not a serious crime

  • Attempting to obstruct the certification of a presidential election: 70% serious crime, 17% not a serious crime

If they won't vote for him, why so scared of him standing?

If I were Biden, I'd want to run against an obvious loser!

Let him run, and let him be defeated.

I wasn't aware that the poll asked the people who contributed whether or not they were afraid of Trump running? Maybe there were some secret questions that you have access to? If so, can you share them and the result with the rest of us?

He's running. What's your problem?

He crimed, and now he has to go to court over it. In addition to running. What's your problem?

Who exactly is not "letting" him run?

If I steal a car, can I get over it by running for dog-catcher?

Most knowledgeable Democrats want Trump to be the GOP nominee for obvious reasons.  Because Biden will beat Trump....again.  In fact, many knowledgeable Republicans have come out and said that the only person Biden could beat with near certainty is Trump.

Who is stopping him from running?  Is this yet another example of playing the eternal victim?  Creating another false narrative to 'fight'?  Jaysus wept.

Trump is no more dishonest or violent than other politicians. Every lie of his can be twisted into a crime if there is a will to prosecute and some flimsy element of male sexuality to go on.  Boil a criminal saga out of trifles like hiding an affair and being a sore loser at an election. It's not like Trump commanded terrorists or had more fraudulent business dealings than the norm, but the laws are so cancerous nowadays they can be used for anything.

It's a sorry state if these are the only 2 left standing to run.

Don't care for either of them, but me me me, Biden is a better choice ... for ME.  Not so good for USA.

It’s not what the polls say that matters.

Its what the checks to his campaign have to say.

Writing checks for a guy facing criminal charges in the hope that he might beat the mountains of evidence against him is not an emotional decision.

Interesting

Could you explain why you think Biden would be good for you and not the USA?

Best Soc Sec COLA in the last 23 yrs since he took the helm, also the highest inflation.  Good for me, bad for US citizens.

Nice exchange rate also, Trump out @ 30 to $1, Biden in, hit 38, now 35+/- to $1.

IF he craps out in office, or gets booted, for simply being senile, then it will get even better.  Harris as president ... there's a scary thought.

I just can't comprehend how anyone could vote for an obviously senile Biden.

How can he lead a country?

Someone answer me that

Try having a look at Trumps continuous rap-sheet, then think...

"Oh, McTrump represents me on the World stage"...........????

Then look at the other options........????

What do you base your 'obviously senile' comment on?  The snippets you watch on Fox or other right-wing fantasy channels?

Gotta sting that a coma victim beat your superman from his basement without breaking a sweat.

Cards on the table time: Biden's a puppet, am I right? Who's the puppeteer?

No running away muttering about deep state. It's name the puppeteer-time or get laughed out of the room.

We're gonna need a name.

Dems do want Trump to run. They also want him jailed. There is no conflict there. They can't stop him running so what's the "let him run" thing all about?

They see the alternative and would vote for a drover's dog before him.

Simply asking Trump Trash direct questions is like throwing water on a witch.

Court's gonna be fun.

Republicans are scared witless of the court case being heard before the election. Scared of sunlight, they want everything hidden until it's too late. Normal people would want a swift hearing so Trump can prove his innocence. I guess that they don't believe he's innocent either. The BS about the deep state and hoax charges are just paranoid reactions.

Why does the choice have to be between a man who is too old to run and a man who has discredited himself while in office?

Same as the presidential election in Brazil where they re-elected a convicted high-school drop-out thief for the 2nd time as alternative to the populist incumbent.

Looks like Biden again which is very sad.  More Woke BS and no economic plan the U.S. is deteriorating.

When did imminent new great depression into continued strong consumer spending become no economic plan?

Not afraid of running against Trump.

That would be Biden's best chance.

But this election is not just another horse race.

There is now an active movement to enforce the constitutional rule that disqualifies Trump from running based on his insurrectionist actions.

Some states will ban him from ballots because of that. A conviction is not required. This will be decided in the Supreme Court. If the ballot bans based on the constitution are upheld it will be game over for the traitorous grifter ex president. Stay tuned.

Or his ex VP and their leading second choice. Or is that 3rd now? Even Republicans are backing off the toxic now that they see it's a loser.

How about stealing military intelligence documents and storing them in the bathroom.? What would happen to you if you were caught with those?

And yet all of the recent recessions have followed Republican presidents going on a spending and deregulation spree. Facts matter, learn some.
