Deputy police chief in Cambodia seeking help to track down call centre gang members

Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn, the deputy national police, is in Cambodia today (Tuesday) to seek cooperation from police there in the arrests of nine Thai and Chinese suspects working in a call centre gang.

 

They allegedly involved in the deaths of three Thai family members and the attempted suicide of the family head. Surachate had with them arrest warrants issued by a Thai court.

 

The Cambodia-based call centre scam came to light when a man in Samut Prakan killed his wife and two children with a knife and attempted to commit suicide with the same knife at their house on August 28. The man survived the suicide bid.

Serious problem, several Thai family members have been targeted. It often starts with a call from numbers with +698/+697 prefix. There is no country code +69.

 

To help spot gang calls, NBTC instructed mobile operators to add a +698 prefix on roaming numbers, +697 indicates VOIP overseas calls.  They also say don't talk to anyone claiming to be from government, rather request a call back number.

 

I'm cautious about mixing money and anything electronic in Thailand.

So easy to obtain Cambodian citizenship. China does not recognize dual-citizenships so these bunch of ethnic Chinese criminals are no longer citizens of the PRC.

Unfortunately,  legitimate calls from overseas,  if routed through the internet (i.e. pretty much all of them) can show up on your display with the same prefix, no matter which country they originate from.
