Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister Panpree Pahitthanukorn will likely call on the German government to allow the sale of the German-made MTU396 engine for the Yuan-class S26T submarine being built by China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co. in a planned meeting with their German counterparts during the United Nations General Assembly session in New York later this month, Suthin said. Relationships between Thailand and Germany and with China would remain intact if the Germans eventually agreed to sell the sought-after engine for use with the Chinese sub by the Thai navy, according to the civilian defence minister. Nevertheless, Thailand’s first Chinese-built S26T sub is not expected for delivery until after next year, given snags in the procurement of the MTU396 engine which was among German military hardware and equipment on which a sustained embargo is imposed for sale to Asia’s superpower. fusion58 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 LOL. Who buys a submarine without an engine? What will they ask for next? “Can you throw in a new screen door with that engine?” ????

Diesel engines has dual-use purposes. MTU even has a joint-venture production in China. Somebody has been making noise to the German government (not difficult to figure out who that was) to sabotage the deal to prevent Thailand from moving closer towards China. Rolls-Royce and China Yuchai to jointly produce MTU engines

Now they need to go around and ask? wtf? Thai morons want the big face but mess up the big deal with beloved Chinese big brothers. MTU should not be allowed to export military equipment to indirectly support Chinese enemies, nor to support Thailand militarily. Maybe they put the hightech German engine in and then the deal gets surprize surprize cancelled and the sub goes back to China ofc with German engine.... won't be surprized if this is the plan ... Is China the enemy of Germany? Here, look at the specifications of this Chinese destroyer: Type 052D destroyer Quote Propulsion The powerplant is a combined diesel or gas (CODOG) system with two 28-megawatt (38,000 hp) QC-280 gas turbines and two 6 MW (8,000 hp) MTU 20V 956TB92 diesel engines.

It will far outlast the life of the sub. I predict problems with leaks, corrosion and system glitches. Finally, a submarine is expected to be a weapon of stealth. How can that be achievable if it is produced by one's adversary? This the the issue with many German made products. They are superior in the short term but the ultra precision in which they are made becomes a liability in the long term. Just as it did with much of the German military's equipment in ww2. A bit of dirt and the guns jam the gears stop turning etc.. They still have not learned this lesson. Hell I would take a Russian or American engine over a German one in any vehicle made for combat. 1
