BANGKOK, Oct 4 (TNA) – The shooting incident at a well-known mall could be a turning point prompting the government to tighten gun control, said the president of the Firearms Business Association.

The association president Mr. Tithitorn Bupparammanee believes that the recent shooting incident at Siam Paragon will serve as a turning point for the government to increase control over the import and sale of firearms, as well as regulate firearm ownership in the future.

He spoke about the issue of imitation firearms, which have been used in criminal activities over the past five years.

With thousands of km of porous borders all around the country, its going to be a mammoth task to prevent guns being smuggled in, why an army tank can cross the border with none the wiser...

A handgun costs 5x what it costs in the West.  The process to obtain a legal registration can take upwards of weeks to months.  That is for registering a "legal firearm."  Trust me - Thailand's gun laws makes legal gun ownership very difficult.  Firearms dealer are highly regulated and controlled.

The kid, from what I understand, was not using an legal firearm.

The government can take all firearms away from citizens.  The vast majority have them for home invasion protection.  Most are middle and upper class.  Trust me.  Somchai Average can't afford a 90K to 120K handgun. They don't carry them around loaded unless they plan on doing prison time. Concealed carry permits are as rare as hen's teeth.  This isn't the US.  Gun regulations are extremely tough here.

Black-market firearms are a different story.  Thailand should point their law enforcement at slowing and stopping the trade of illegal weapons use by criminals to commit crimes. And as well, try cracking down on criminals.

But - those law-abiding citizens with legal, register firearms are low-hanging fruit.  Watch!

Mall Shooting Could Lead to Increased Gun Control?

As long as Somchai wears a mask but no helmet on a motorbike, as long as Somchai comes against you on the wrong side of the road, red lights are a matter of interpretation ...... good luck with gun control.

The head line says it all; "could" does not mean "must" - you're welcome!

A lot of the illegal firearms here get sold out the back door of the local police station, or the Forest Police Armory which gets robbed weekly.

Now comes news that a Nonthaburi police senior sergeant has stolen a staggering 100+ guns from the Pak Kret station where he was based.

The Korat shooter was RTA and helped himself to weapons at the armory before heading for some killing.

At the very least there should be a national gun registration data base, so they can track guns. I mean they have a database on all of us (TM7, TM30, TM47). Maybe call it a TM9mm

Apparently he used a modified BB gun. I doubt if they will ban or control BB guns. They should implement the same gun control laws as the UK which is probably one of the safest countries in the world where gun crime is concerned
