False information, the airlines did not refuse to collect it. Airlines can only differentiate  between passengers on fixed booking information. In common with other the tourist tax does not apply to all passengers.

For example Heathrow imposes a separate tax over and above the Passenger Service Charge from about 3.500THB upwards depending on seat size, this is easily identifiable from the booking.

People should remember Thailand could have adopted the same approach as most other countries with a tourist tax and applied it to hotel bookings on a nightly basis.

The 300 baht would pale into insignificance.

Akin to putting the prices up in a bar because they don't have many customers - and no I'm not being flippant - it was a tragic event that seems to be coming commonplace, but to link the compensation payments to the tourist tax is unbelievably bad P.R.

The MoT&S has been trying to get their grubby little hands on this 300 baht fee for a few years now. They want to collect and manage this revenue with little oversight. They do NOT want it to be collected as part of the 700 Baht TS fee, which could be increased to 1,000.

 

With 25 million tourists this is a nice little 7.5 BILLION baht cash pile which can easily be stolen.

 

Sometimes they say it's for unpaid medical bills often said to be in the several hundred million baht range. Sometimes they say it's for maintenance and upkeep, other times it's for the coral reefs.

 

Collection is always the issue, airlines want no part of a new ticket line item. This kiosk idea seems like it would be an epic fail.

 

Seems rather ghoulish to push this latest requirement while the cremation ashes of the deceased are still warm? But this Minister seems to be quite foolish and simple-minded.

Using Thai logic, entry to the USA should be an absolutely astronomical amount then?

What the governemnt seem to be overlooking here is that foreigners already purchase a Visa in order to gain entry, pay to enter certain buildings and areas of natural beauty, are over charged by taxi drivers and suffer double-pricing almost everywhere they go. Alas, now they want every visitor to pay a fee to literally walk in? 

There's a tipping point somewhere when visitors will say "sad that" and they will look at alternative destinations & begin voting with their feet.  

I'm not actually against an entry fee - lots of countries do it and have done for years. But it's one thing after another here if you're not Thai.

Plus posters have a very narrow view of who is a foreigner and who these hospital bill evading foreigners are. The vast majority of unpaid bills result from medical treatment by uninsured workers from Myanmar and Cambodia, especially those in the construction and fishing industries.  This is why the Phuket hospitals have the highest rate of unpaid medical bills because of the large number of foregn workers.

All legal workers in Thailand have to pay social security and register at a local hospital.
