The Phuket Express reports that the draft bill was approved by Cabinet yesterday, November 21. If, as is likely, same-sex marriage is legalised, Thailand will become the third Southeast Asian country, after Taiwan and Nepal. The Move Forward Party, which won the most votes in the May general election, but was blocked from forming a government, has long championed the bill. The bill passed its first parliamentary reading last year, but was stalled when parliament was dissolved ahead of the election. For example, if one's partner is dying one has no right to be consulted on medical treatment, and has no rights relating to disposal of the body. Then there are other matters such as inheritance of one's partner's pension or adoption. Who would be the Husband and who would be the Wife when dealing with Immigration. At the moment a foreign husband has the show the 400k in the bank. A foreign wife has to show nothing. Until there is clarification, there are interalia tax implications that need to be addressed.
