Thai police arrest 11 Montagnards near Bangkok

The move is a concern to thousands of Vietnamese in Thailand

Thailand’s Royal Police and immigration authority have arrested 11 Montagnard Vietnamese who were taking refuge near the capital city of Bangkok, according to a member of an organization representing the ethnic group.

 

Y Quynh Buondap is a member of Montagnards Stand For Justice (MSFJ) and has been living as a refugee in Thailand for many years.

 

Speaking to Radio Free Asia on Monday he said thousands of Montagnards in Thailand are living in fear.

 

“Strangers follow them when they go out and often take photos of their rental homes,” he said.

 

“On the morning of November 24, many cars from Thailand’s police and Immigration Department came to a Montagnard people’s residential area. They asked them to open the door in the Vietnamese language.”

 

He said most of the Montagnard people there were sleeping and did not know what was happening. 

 

“As some did not open their doors, the police broke them down to search for people. They arrested all the men they found.

 

“They said that these people are living illegally in Thailand regardless of their having the U.N. card [recognizing refugee status] or not and that Thailand did not accommodate people coming illegally. Then the arrestees were taken to and detained at Bang Yai police station.”

So they wanted some money and then were let go again. Crappy reporting btw, nothing is even explained about what this montagnards is about.

Just ethnic cleansing in another communist country.

Not at all surprised by the Thai government action on this.  They have been doing this for many decades now against numerous groups leaving the strife torn areas of their home countries.  

Of course, the UN isn't exactly expediting matters like this at all.  They continue to work at a snail's pace while riding around in luxury vehicles, living in very expensive accommodations, and sending their children to very costly international schools.

What do you expect from the UN where it has no authority? Especially in a country that refuses to be a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and lost its UN Human Rights designation in 2014 after the military coup? Thailand sends North Korean refugees back to North Korea and Uyghur refugees back to China. The UNHRC in Thailand can only advise the government on treatment of refugees.

Reminds me of when all those Uygurs that had refugee status, were rounded up and sent back to China... to face death? we don't know what became of them

What we do know is that shortly after the roundup we had the bombing of Erawan Shrine
