5 takeaways from the latest indictment of Hunter Biden

A new indictment of Hunter Biden became public on Thursday evening.

President Biden’s son faces a total of nine charges — three felonies and six misdemeanors — in relation to tax evasion and other tax-related matters.

Biden already faces gun charges, relating to allegedly lying about his use of illegal drugs in the process of buying a gun in 2018.

The new charges were approved by a grand jury empaneled by Special Counsel David Weiss. Weiss was first appointed as the U.S. Attorney for Delaware by former President Trump but continued in the role after Present Biden’s election.

Weiss has received criticism from Republicans more recently for purportedly being too lenient on Hunter Biden. He was appointed special counsel in August.

The charges, filed with the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, come after a plea deal collapsed during the summer.

Biden is expected to vigorously contest the charges. If convicted, he would face a maximum sentence of 17 years in prison.

Here are the political takeaways from the new indictment.

Trump and Hunter Biden criminal trials loom in an election year

There are plenty of differences in the trials facing former President Trump and Hunter Biden.

Hunter Biden has never held or sought public office. His alleged offenses, though serious, pose no fundamental threat to American democracy comparable with the details of Trump’s indictments relating to election interference and the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

But a Biden trial would be embarrassing for father and son alike.

The alleged law-breaking is only part of the story. There is also its luridness to consider.

Hunter Biden has himself written about his conduct while he struggled with drug and alcohol addiction following the death of his brother Beau in 2015.

A trial would bring fresh attention to a lifestyle that, according to the indictment, included vast expenditures on “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing and other items of a personal nature, in short everything but his taxes.”

Being the son the POTUS cannot keep you out of jail forever. This is starting to resemble the case of the red bull kid in Thailand. A national embarrassment for the once great US of A. Let's hope they prove that there is no corruption in the US legal system and he goes to jail. It's time.

Are you aware the Biden has 4 children? Well, three. One died possibly because of exposure to toxic chemicals during his service in Iraq.

Pure desperation on the the part of the retrumplikans id love to see a full blown investigation of blondy and her hubby in their sweetheart 2 billion grift of the Saudis (love to know what they got in return humm?)or perhaps blondies involvement in daddy’s scam charity?

What is so desperate about wanting to see justice served?  I am a lifelong independent and far from being a "retrumplikan."  As pointed out in the indictment, Hunter bragged about his opulent lifestyle while intentionally evading $1.4 million in income taxes.  You are the desperate one, using what aboutism to defend this shameful crime.  Shame on you.

The Democrats control the DOJ.  Why haven't they gone after blondy?  When you make accusations, name real names or is it because you are confused about who's who?

Seems in this case the old saying, "There's one in every family," applies.  Black sheep, that is.

I have read of Hunter's excuse of turning to drugs because he could not handle the grief over his brother's, Beau, death.  Using a dead relative as an excuse for drug addiction is another sorry and shameful excuse.  Go ahead.  Keep defending him.

Well, if that's the case, then by JonnyF's logic, I guess the Biden family was 1/4 bad and 3/4 good. I think that claim was entirely ridiculous.

A dead relative? Really? You mean like a second cousin? Classifying a brother as just a "dead relative" is a very cheap shot.

A cheap shot?  Really?  You injected "just" just to prove a point.  Who's being insensitive now?  Typical of your antics, blowing things all out of proportion.  Making mountains out of molehills comes to mind.

Yeah Joe lied about that as well to try and score points during a speech.

Imagine that, misleading people about your own sons death to score brownie points. I'd say it was a new low but this is Joe Biden we are talking about.

I couldn't care less about Hunter, except to the extent it exposes Joe's lies and any crimes he has committed.  Anyone remember the debate where he claimed Hunter never took money from China and he never discussed Hunter's business?  Sorry lying liar who lies, now exposed.

The indictments of Hunter are a clever ruse to a) make sure he doesn't testify to congress because now he has 5th amendment protections and b) to give the illusion that they're being equal in their application of the law.  He'll never spend a day in prison for his misdeeds because this will drag on through election day 2024 and the next day, Biden will prove once again he's a lying liar and pardon him.

(That's assuming Joe even makes it the election day.  I agree with some right wing conspiracies that Joe will suddenly take ill before the election, when the walls close in, and Kamala will pardon him and his son a'la Ford/ Nixon.)

It's something for them to hang their hat on,

I feel sorry for them it must not be easy to have the whole world laughing at them.

Be compassionate, They have so little, let them have this.

It would have been prudent for JB, a great father and man of integrity to counsel the crack head to cool his jets while being a  "lobbyist" since flying on AF2 to UA and becoming a board member o Burisma. One thing lead to another and here you are, majority think Biden is involved. HB is moaning about a crack relapse and Republicans are trying to "kill him."

Can't make this up, and the Biden legacy keeps on evolving on the side of comic humiliation and outlandish absurdity never before seen. You could say that if one forgoes expensive indulgence in crack cocaine and prostitutes in favor of paying income tax, felony tax indictments are not a probable outcome. Hunter was never so smart though.

Meanwhile, the gloom over Biden corruption scandal is well known among the majority and a potential FARA indictment will lead right up to Joe and bring more impressive legacy accolades to arguably a very troubled family of Biden misfits.

You expect reason from trumpsters? if they were reasonable they would not be trumpsters.
