So you did queue jump .

I would have refused the offer to queue jump and respectfully told him that I would wait in line and wait until its my turn .

All the serial Waiers can seen to be abusive online, is there any connection ?

Grovelling and being abusive, both sort of extremes

I do neither

All the ‘serial wai avoiders’ seem to draw daft hyperbolic exaggeration to justify their deliberate inability to be respectful….     pattern ???

Ignorance & disrespect - you seem to do both so well…

Why am I ignorant and disrespectful ?

Bearing in mind that I always return a Wai , but never do it first .

The person whom I replied to stated that he deliberately Wai-ed the Chief immigration officer hoping to jump the queue , no exaggeration there

For anybody who's wondering. The correct time to wai an immigration officer is immediately he sets eyes on you. Other then that, I wai to Thai friends as soon as I see them as I notice they all do the same thing to me and each other, especially if the friend or acquaintance is older or they haven't met in a while. How you wai is irrelevant as long as you make some attempt. Thais will wai with their hands full, I have even seen a Thai make a scant wai while carrying a bowl of water.

I even wai to some expat farang friends and sometimes we will speak in Thai.

From my Thai culture class that was/is/was a requirement for the teacher's license:

There are 3 "Wais" (with slight variations for special occasions, begging forgiveness, royalty, ceremonies, overbearing godlike school directors that will fire you )

Thumbs to your chin for friends, coworkers, casual encounters (on the street, local shops [not 7/11 or supermarket] work meetings)

Thumbs to your mouth for parents (includes in-laws and elderly family)

Thumbs to your forehead for monks.

The first is casual and is used about 80% of the time

The second is because parents gave you breath (life)

The third is because monks give you spiritual enlightenment

Kind of like in the Usa if someone offered a handshake and you just stood there

I wish the wai would replace the handshake everywhere. I dislike being made to feel obligated and touch someone else's contaminated flesh.

I prefer we all bobble our heads side to side like in India.
