Trump Warns of US Withdrawal from Ukraine Peace Efforts Amid Stalled Negotiations President Donald Trump has signaled that the United States may abandon its efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine if negotiations continue to stall. Speaking from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump emphasized that the US was committed to ending the conflict quickly, but warned that further engagement would be reconsidered if progress remained elusive. “We’re talking about here people dying. We’re going to get it stopped, ideally,” Trump said. “Now if, for some reason, one of the two parties makes it very difficult, we’re just going to say, ‘You’re foolish, you’re fools, you’re horrible people,’ and we’re going to just take a pass.” Trump did not give a fixed deadline for a truce but made it clear that the window for US involvement was narrowing. His remarks echoed earlier warnings from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who expressed growing frustration with the lack of advancement in ceasefire discussions. “We’re not going to continue with this endeavour for weeks and months on end,” Rubio stated. “The US had other priorities to focus on.” Rubio, who had met with European leaders in Paris the previous day to discuss possible pathways to peace, further underscored the urgency of the situation. “We need to determine very quickly now—and I’m talking about a matter of days—whether or not this is doable,” he said. “If it’s not going to happen, then we’re just going to move on.” The US administration initially believed it could broker a swift resolution to the war, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. However, the hope for a speedy ceasefire has waned as diplomatic efforts have repeatedly hit roadblocks, with Washington blaming both sides for the impasse. Russia, for its part, has imposed strict conditions on any potential ceasefire, making negotiations particularly difficult. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the challenges, stating that “the negotiations taking place are quite difficult.” He added, “The Russian side is striving to reach a peace settlement in this conflict, to ensure its own interests, and is open to dialogue.” Meanwhile, the violence on the ground continues. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that two people were killed on Friday following a barrage of Russian missile strikes. In a post on X, Zelensky condemned the attacks, which come as diplomatic channels remain gridlocked. Despite the grim outlook, there were glimmers of cautious optimism. US Vice President JD Vance, who met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome on Friday, suggested there might still be hope for an end to the conflict. “I want to update the prime minister on some of the negotiations between Russia, Ukraine, and also some of the things that have happened even in the past 24 hours,” Vance said. “I won’t prejudge them, but we do feel optimistic that we can hopefully bring this war—this very brutal war—to a close.” In a separate development, Ukraine and the United States have made initial progress toward a new minerals deal, which had previously been derailed. A memorandum of intent was signed on Thursday outlining plans to create an investment fund for Ukraine’s reconstruction as part of a broader economic partnership. Arrest After 11-Year Manhunt: “Bang Ae” Captured in Mountain Hideout for Brutal Murder

After over a decade on the run, Thai police have arrested a notorious contract killer known as “Bang Ae”, wanted for the cold-blooded ambush and murder of a married couple in 2014. The arrest took place in a mountainous area of Trang province, where the suspect had been living in seclusion and working as a rubber tapper. The dramatic capture occurred on the night of 17 April, when a heavily armed police unit ascended into the hills of Moo 5, Lipang Subdistrict, Palian District, and apprehended Ismaae 47, also known as “Bang Ae”. He had been the subject of an arrest warrant issued by Trang Provincial Court in June 2015 on multiple charges, including murder and illegal possession of military-grade firearms. A reward of 100,000 baht had been offered by the Royal Thai Police for information leading to his arrest. The murders date back to 2 May 2014, when Bang Ae allegedly used an AK-47 assault rifle to fire over 12 rounds into a Toyota Corolla on Maharaj Road, Yan Ta Khao District, Trang. The car crashed into an electricity pole, riddled with bullet holes. Mr Weerapol, 26, who was driving, died at the scene from gunshot wounds to his shoulders, chest, and head. His wife, Ms Nitinan, 23, was seriously wounded and died shortly afterwards in hospital. Police found methamphetamine and spent shell casings at the scene. Investigators later uncovered a dark web of motives: drug trafficking debts and a love triangle. Mr Weerapol had allegedly owed over 100,000 baht to Bang Ae for both drug deals and a loan to buy the vehicle. Furthermore, the suspect was reportedly having an affair with Ms Nitinan, which led him to fear retribution from her husband. Authorities tracked the fugitive to a remote rubber plantation in Trang’s rugged mountains. After hiking 2km on foot, officers found the suspect shirtless and cutting wood. Initially, he denied his identity, claiming to be “Mr Witthawat”. However, when asked to name his parents, he hesitated and eventually gave a nervous smile. Upon being shown comparison photographs, he admitted his true identity. Bang Ae had evaded capture for 11 years, having returned to the area under the radar. His face was featured in the national police’s most-wanted list in 2018, listed as number 93. Pol. Lt. Gen. Piyawat Chaloemsi, Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 9, led the operation along with local and regional police task forces, targeting influential criminals and hired gunmen. Authorities described Bang Ae as a “high-value target” due to the severity of his crimes and the length of his evasion. Following his arrest, Bang Ae denied all charges, but has been remanded to Yan Ta Khao Police Station for formal legal proceedings. Police vowed to continue their crackdown on fugitives and contract killers, calling the arrest a major success in restoring public trust and justice after more than a decade of waiting. -- 2025-04-19 -

Barista Killed in Road Crash on Way to Work in Nakhon Ratchasima
Picture from responders. A road crash claimed the life of a young barista on morning of 18 April,as he was en route to work in Nakhon Ratchasima. The incident occurred at approximately 10:50, on Mittraphap Road, near the entrance to the Terdthai Market in Suranaree Subdistrict, Mueang District. Police Lieutenant Anon Sajantuek, an investigator from Pho Klang Police Station, responded to the scene located between kilometre markers 138–139 on Highway 2. There, authorities discovered a severely injured man lying in the road alongside a damaged Honda Wave 125i motorcycle, registration number from Nakhon Ratchasima. The deceased was identified as Mr. Kittiphan “Men” Chanthahan, aged 28. He had sustained multiple injuries to his torso, believed to have resulted from being run over by a trailer truck following an initial collision. About 10 metres from the body, police found a white Isuzu box truck with Bangkok registration, parked on the shoulder. Its right-hand side mirror and front were damaged. Around 30 metres further down the road, a white Isuzu lorry with Samut Prakan registrations was also pulled over. According to the box truck driver, he had just finished making deliveries in town and was returning to his home in Sikhiu District via the frontage road. As he merged back into the main traffic lane, a motorcycle clipped his right-hand mirror and fell. The lorry travelling behind was unable to stop or swerve in time, running over the motorcyclist. Later that day, the owner of “YY Cup G Bar’fe”, a coffee shop located beside the Huai Banyan Reservoir in Suranaree Subdistrict, arrived at the scene after learning of the crash through social media. She confirmed that Mr. Kittiphan was employed as a barista at her shop, which had just reopened that morning following the Songkran holidays. She noted it was unusual for him to be late for work, and she had become concerned prior to hearing the devastating news. -- 2025-04-19
