  • If I only had a baht for every time I have heard that.  The reasons keep changing but it's always the same old tune.  They are all still in Thailand whining about everything and not going anywhere.  I

  • yes, this is why I asked. only desperate women would want me.   Can you specify what psychological evaluation? I suffer from acid reflux and lately some knee issues.

If the day ever comes when Vietnam offers a similar retirement visa to Thailand, there will be a mass exodus from Thailand.

If older with no desire to buy in, then fine, keep the go bag handy, and enjoy the single life.   But if retiring early, renting for 20-30 years is a lot of wasted finances.

I've got an eye toward Vietnam so curious about this thread.

You say renting is flushing $$ down the drain, but if you buy in TH there is always the trouble of trying to sell and recoup the outlay.

12 of one, half dozen of the other?

At least with renting you can get away fast.

Really depends on age, finances and how settled into one area you want to be.  Only with experience and knowledge of any new area.

In TH, it's condos only as safer investment, especially with any new, much younger relationship.  The system is set up, to gift any investment, that's not in your name.

Buying is always a better investment, especially with land, and the more the better, as that is what appreciates.  Condos, no experience, but you'd be happy to recoup the cost.  Which is fine, as that translates to almost free housing.

But do you really want to live in the same area ?

If not for my daughter (village orphan) that I could not take out of the Amphur, no way would I have lived in Udon Thani for 17 years.   Made the best of it, and with the 2 houses, live housing cost free, and even made a tidy profit on the 2nd one, paying for everything we now have, house, solar & transport, free & clear.

BUT ... long term investment, and initial investment wasn't exactly inexpensive (relative), and depended a lot on trusting partner, as in 100%.   Or I would have simply rented.  Renting gives you so many options.

Having the kid, limited all my options, though no regrets there, as raising her was the best anyone could wish for, along with my wife.  As soon as she was off to Uni though, we exercised all those options :coffee1:

Vietnam, no real retirement visa, so no investment question to ponder.  Renting is only option.  So back to square one.

Hindsight, without the kid, as most wouldn't take in an orphan anyway, then I'd simply be nomadic, the whole time in SEA, and simply experience it all, TH, KH, MM & VN.  If bored, ID &, MY.
