Thailand and Cambodia join forces to tackle transboundary haze pollution

Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday unveiled plans to form a joint task force with Cambodia to combat transboundary haze pollution. The decision was made ahead of a scheduled meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet set to take place in Thailand on February 7.

 

The leaders will undertake a joint study tour to Sa Kaeo province, an area severely impacted by PM2.5 transboundary pollution. The pollution in Thailand’s border provinces, typically caused by wildfires, necessitates coordination with neighbouring countries for effective management, Thavisin explained.

 

Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) will provide satellite images to aid the task force’s response planning for hotspots created by wildfires. The continuous exchange of information between Thailand and Cambodia via the future joint task force will be a critical factor in the countries’ collective efforts to combat transboundary haze pollution.

 

PM Srettha emphasised the government’s focus on the right to clean air, alongside tourism-based economic stimulation. In line with this commitment, the Clean Air Bill has been introduced to Parliament.

You may be coughing and spluttering in Thailand (especially Bangkok) but here in Cambodia there is NO air pollution problem.

Following a recent headline in the Bangkok Post which stated that the “PM2.5 inertial particle level is not safe in almost all (Thai) provinces.”, the director of Cambodia’s Air Quality Control Department at the Ministry of Environment has stated that the air situation in Cambodia is still good.

So, Thailand, may I suggest you get your own act together rather than point a finger at your neighbours.

Well you can always count on two relatively illegitimate leaders to come up with a great plan. Manet was essentially appointed by his father after 30 years of rule. Why not keep the billions in the family? And Sretta was of course appointed by the army after voiding the duly elected Pita.

How will touring help?  You can't see the particles.  Trump would build a wall to keep out Cambodian PM2.5.

..looking at this Screen Capture one would think the Govt should be having discussions with Laos and Vietnam..air flow from Cambodia this time of year, seems to head southwesterly towards lower half of the Gulf of Thailand..what you think?

Seems to be a little bit more burning going on in Cambodia. Wonder if sugar cane burning is involved? Seem to recall that a couple of Thai companies operate some of the biggest refineries over there. Only accepting unburned cane? I doubt it.
