Ophthalmologist Recommendation

I went to see her in 2019 as was having an issue with one eye.  A one person clinic and you just que up and wait.  She ultimately was able to diagnose a hole in the macula which requires surgery to repair.  I was leaving in two weeks so waited until returning home and had that diagnosis confirmed by a specialist with surgery shortly thereafter.  While her office and equipment seems basic compared to western clinics she was able to make the correct diagnosis which is a credit to her skills.

As for the top Opthmologists the Rutnin Clinic in Bangkok is considered the top eye clinic in Thailand.  I did go there with a friend about 10 years ago and they have a large clientel with many from Arab countries who come for eye care.  Depending on the severity of your issue they would be worth a visit as well.

Rutnin has had a spate of very poor reviews recently. I've never been but am looking for cataract surgery. I'm in Pattaya, so it's a bit of a schlep up to Bangkok if it turns out to be a wasted journey. But I'm not that happy with my Bangkok Pattaya eye man. And no insurance cover for this procedure (out patient).

Around ฿90000 which included follow up appointments and medication, Dr Sante Bangkok Jomtien. It depends on the lense which is fitted, my left eye required a more expensive lense. You can have lenses where you won’t need reading specs, more expensive but I was advised they were not for me because of my glaucoma.

So it was 90k for 2, right?

Rutnin Eye Hospital on Asoke in Bangkok is the top ophthalmological facility in Thailand - they have dozens of doctors specializing in every aspect of vision and eye care

I received the most thorough eye exam of my life at Rutnin Eye Hospital. The results were also clearly explained to me by the ophthalmologist.

Me, too, some years ago. World class.

The bad reviews mostly reflect disappointment with pre-conceived expectations, some naive. Rutnin is a busy place. Expect waiting times from the start. The exam is more thorough than the usual and takes place in stages. It's not a speedy process. It's not cheap, but reasonably priced. If you're used to BPH, it'll be affordable. :)

Maybe at a big hospital if you don't select the actual recommended specialist you could end up with an office junior, they have to learn somehow

One mistake people often make at Rutnin is booking an EYE EXAMINATION when what they really want is a simple VISION TEST.

An eye examination is exactly that, an exam of the eye itself, for disease and any other physical issues.  It usually DOES NOT include a vision test.

If you want a vision test and prescription, you have to ask for that specifically.  If you are considering progressive lenses, make sure the prescription has your PD (pupillary distance)
