scoutman360 Posted January 19 Share Posted January 19 Take note. Dentists are taught to say you need a crown any time a root canal is needed. Especially when they grind down your tooth and find a crack down in there. Every time I had a sensitive tooth that they ground deep, said a crack is there, and I need root canal and crown. Luckily, my sister was a dental assistant and told me the game. Dentists are playing it safe and go for the guarantee solution for all. Root canals cannot be avoided if there is an infection in the root. (Make them show you the infection in the x-ray, it will look like a black void at the base of the root). She recommended to always go with the filling and not take the crown the first time. Was it like 2-3 times ? 38k per tooth with root canal included. Prices for root canals vary depending on which tooth ad they can have 1-4 canals, the more canals they have the more it costs plus whatever complications dentist will encounter. Big fancy clinics and hospitals will cost more and have lower quality of service while the cheaper ones you probably won't want to be in if you look at the age of the equipment. With that said root canal can cost anything from 15-30k and the crown will be depending on materials and clinic 20-30k Tell us which tooth and that will make estimation more accurate. Estimated 3 sessions for crown work - Baht 14,500. Work done by two dental specialists, who work in government hospitals, but do extra work at a private clinic. cauldlad Posted January 20 Share Posted January 20 I have just had a root canal done in Pattaya two weeks ago. 8,000bt. Went yesterday for a check up. Healing nicely but he wants to wait another three weeks until it is 100% healed before fitting the crown. Do not know the price of the crown but he did an excellent job with the root canal.. markeewan Posted January 20 Share Posted January 20 (edited) I had a molar root canal and gold crown done in Bangkok for $1300 and the AU dentist had quoted me $5000 for it (but that was for porcelain and not gold). This was about 5 years ago so prices will have changed a bit, but this is also larger and gold, so I would think ballpark still. From memory there was a specialist dentist that just came once a week to do this type of work and I had to go 4 or five times to have it completed. Well, if you consider the costs for a air ticket it's wise to take the Australian offer. A root canal treatment could not be done within one day in many cases. So another expenses for accommodation. A root canal is where the nerve roots are cleaned out and filled with a special solution and sealed, and then a crown is fitted (sometimes with a pin if the tooth strucure is not syfficient). It cost over 30,000 baht when all was said and done, including 10000 for powdered bone. When finished the tooth was still sensitive to hot and cold. I went to another dentist in Pattaya and spent another 20,000 baht to have a Panorex and the tooth taken out. There was bone loss around the tooth and my local dentist should have taken it out, not filled it. Total outlay over 50K and I have a great big hole in my mouth. The clinic the dentist rents in Australia, and the receptionists/assistants they pay for, are considerably more expensive than what would be paid in Thailand. It does not matter to me. The price goes way up for re-doing old root canals, use of microscopes, ultrasonic cleanses, etc etc. You don't typically know the total cost beforehand. It feels like a lot of places in Pattaya are rushed or that there are too many customers to handle. I can feel it when I go in. One thing I don't want rushed is dental work or the next person waiting out in the lobby for the next appointment. Apparently gold (actually gold alloy) is still the best in many ways. Around $A1,000 per crown (no root canals), would have been much cheaper if not gold. Dentist told me the crowns would last from 6 to 12 years, all good so far. He was also a specialist who travelled between clinics. In your case, if your dentist quoted me $2900, I would be out of pocket $1450. It doesn't sound as if HCF is particularly generous with its refunds.
