SOME Sisaket MPs want Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to negotiate with Cambodian leader Hun Manet on reopening the gate to Preah Vihear temple ruins from Khao Phra Viharn National Park on the Thai side during his visit to the neighbouring country next month, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan. 20).

Dr. Phumin Lee Teeraprasert, a Pheu Thai MP for Sisaket’s constituency 4, said on Jan. 2 he and six other Phue Thai MPs for this province had an opportunity to ask to Srettha start the negotiations on reopening this access to the Unesco World Heritage Site and he scheduled a meeting for Wednesday Jan. 24 on this issue prior to his visit to Cambodia on Feb. 7.

In 1962, after a lengthy dispute between Cambodia and Thailand over ownership, the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled that the temple was in Cambodia.

About time, too, I'd love to visit it. Fingers crossed they see sense and reach an agreement.

Only the Thai government is stopping you:

"Phra Vihan, as it is referred to in Thai, is a temple that was constructed atop a cliffside escarpment that lies across the border in Cambodia but is far more accessible as a day Trip from Si Sa Ket"

"Cambodia allows day-Trip access to the Temple on a VISA-free basis from Thailand"

Not necessarily, as I recall it was closed after the Thai and Cambodian military started shooting at each other up there.

The Cambodians have long had a plan to build a cable car from their territory up to it, but I guess they need access from the Thai side to do the construction at the top. A shame, as I spent a week in Siem Reap visiting the temples at Angkor and surroundings, and Preah Vihear is from the same period but in a much grander setting.
