BANGKOK (NNT) - Steinmeier remarked that this period is a significant time for Thailand, which is becoming more free and democratic, as evidenced by its elections. This reflects Thailand's stable foundation in democratic practices.

President Steinmeier also expressed that Germany is committed to advancing cooperation between the two countries in areas such as trade, investment, and tourism. He cited that in 2023, the value of investments reached 14 billion euros, with over 600 German companies investing in Thailand, creating jobs and boosting the economy.

Regarding tourism, he noted that each year, more than 200,000 German tourists visit Thailand, and he hopes for increased collaboration and joint efforts in this sector.

Additionally, he anticipates Thailand's cooperation in transitioning to clean energy and desire to see strengthened facilitation of investment between the two countries. This is particularly relevant in supporting the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and Thailand, with the aspiration to see this agreement materialize soon.

President Steinmeier stated that Germany is ready to expand cooperation, emphasizing policies to reduce dependence on a single side and expand trade and investment in Southeast Asia, recognizing Thailand's strategic geographical position in trade.

President Steinmeier is obviously a man possessing a spectacular level of ignorance. Did he even pay attention to the most recent elections which were stolen by PT and the army? Does he know anything

  • The word "democracy" lost its meaning when pronounced by West elite.

If every visiting head of state (in this case) or of government spoke the truth during an official visit, there wouldn't BE any official visits anywhere in the world. Or any unofficial ones for that matter.

So what's he supposed to do? Stand there smiling beatifically and waving to the adoring masses as if he were the British queen?

Presumably as compared to Germany in the early 1930s.

President Steinmeier is obviously a man possessing a spectacular level of ignorance. Did he even pay attention to the most recent elections which were stolen by PT and the army? Does he know anything about the bought and paid for senators? Is this guy paying attention at all or is he simply sleep walking through life? It appears that he would say or do anything and it also appears that this clown is not a man possessing a shred of integrity. Exactly the same as the Thai Army and PT.

Well it worked for her for 69 years or so...

What democratic progress would that be?

Undoubtedly he is aware of the casserole of nonsense that is the democratic process here, but what are world leaders going to do?

If they want to engage, for whatever reasons they have, they have to drink the Koolaid being served and pretend it's good.

So, they should not stand on their convictions, instead they should lie like all politicians do to achieve a goal...Umm, OK.

Just as you do when you smile politely at the neighbours you detest.

Actually, I screamed at my neighbor recently ;-)

He has to pay lip service to his hosts to achieve his goal of building alliances.

Problem is the thais will run around thinking they are so important and the world respects and envies them.

Bit like telling the kids,  well done you're so clever , when they get an F in school.

Not really.

Give Thailand time to break encrusted structures. You can't put everything upside down with one move only.🙏

Reflect on this, Frank-Walter:

Thailand holds the world record in successful coups:

Coup d'états in the world
Looking at the world since 1945, Thailand recorded the highest number of successful coups at ten.

Wouldn't a "stable foundation in democratic practices" preclude the Military in politics, Frank-Walter?

Fair note though, they said democratic "progress", as in you held a public election that's nice but you still didn't abide by the people's will.

If he had said congratulations to Thailand's democratic system of government, well then, that would of have been laughable.

Germany's "transition to clean energy" now has them buying coal-fired power from France, as they can't produce enough juice for their own people and industry..

And sat on their hands and said nothing when the US blew up their Nordstream pipelines.

Thailand should give this guy a wide berth. :whistling:

Not many countries outside of Asia know anything about the politics in Thailand.

Why should they?Thailand is not a big player on world level as far as economics go.

You are right he is ignorant but they should have told him what is going on.

He probably knows what is going on but people in politics say what they have to say to get what they want.

Nothing new and happens every where daily.

Integrity? He's a politician FFS......and a diplomat. A diplomat's job is to lie for his country.

Interesting that Steinmeier's praise is not in quotes as one would find when referring to a person's actual remark. Instead what we see is the above statement again without quotes that would confirm "praise" was actually spoken by Steinmeir. It wasn't.

From X (Twitter) by dpa International:

"German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praise the steps taken to strengthen democracy in Thailand under the new civilian government as positive progress during his visit to the country." (my bold and quotations)

1:13 AM · Jan 26, 2024

Headline day before Jan. 25 from dpa:

German president applauds democratic progress in Thailand

https://news.yahoo.com

Unquoted:

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised the steps taken to strengthen democracy in Thailand under the new civilian government as positive progress during his visit to the country.

Quoted:

"After just a few months in power, you can't expect everything to change. But the signals we have seen so far are very encouraging," Steinmeier said in Bangkok on Thursday.

The people who display spectacular levels of ignorance are the people on AN who haven't a clue how these things work.

After lengthy consultations at Embassy/diplomatic level (usually over months), the 2 countries agree that a visit by the German Head of State would be appropriate as a gesture to warm up relations between the 2 countries (& more generally the EU & The West) in light of the outcomes of Thai politics last year. Further discussions agree on mutually agreeable dates. The German Head of State arrives ...

And people here expect him to launch in to a torrent of abuse about how awful Thai politics is, how they need to join the C21st or else I'll never deign to visit you ever again you each-way Charlies & toadies etc etc etc!

Did "That thai Man" ever pay his German Taxes?
