snoop1130 Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Dengue fever has escalated into a significant concern in Thailand, with the Department of Disease Control (DDC) reporting over 8,000 infections and 13 fatalities in January. DDC Director-General Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn highlighted a sharp 91.25% increase in cases compared to January of the previous year, where 4,286 individuals were affected, noting as many as 8,197 people have contracted the disease so far. Dengue fever, a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes, is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Symptoms include high fever, severe headaches, muscle and joint pains, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, and swollen glands. The disease poses a higher risk to children aged five to 14, with the majority of cases reported in the southern and central parts of Thailand. happysoul Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Saw that in Chiang Mai Ram the other day. It's for a Dengue vaccine. Wonder if it works ? Anybody know something about it ?
NativeBob Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 I think I had it twice over 4-5 years in Bangkok. Nasty sh*t. The most annoying was sudden change of taste: drinking water tastes like sewage etc. But never lasted more than 5 days. Recovery to 100% strength had before took about 2-3 weeks. Was there some scandal with Dengue vaccine in Philipinnes? Nasty indeed
Popular Post dinsdale Posted February 7, 2024 Popular Post Posted February 7, 2024 Pity they weren't focussing on this instead of Omicron. The sad truth is Thais are not exactly tidy people and this will continue. 2 1

Celsius Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 Expect to pay 50k a night at the hospital to get "treated" for this.

Yes: my son collapsed in dep.store and we went to St. Louis Hospital. 5 days under dripper (basic solution nothing special). Every morning (6AM) strange student from local college came to take a blood sample. Why? Maybe study? cost 28.000 THB. He recovered himself. No: I didn't. It is your immune system that fights Dengue. You just sit and wait until its over. PS: I saw a little girl in our kindergarten after Dengue - she lost so much weight that turn her into a shadow. Literally. So skinny! PPS: few years later I got it again. Same suffering and weakness, same change of taste. Vitamins don't do much. Its only your immune system fights it. And common sense to avoid places with stale water and pure luck.

The private hospitals are just offering it for the money or to get rid of old stock. 1 1

ChipButty Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 That Dengue fever is not funny, I've had it twice first time they kept me in hospital, rip off merchants, the second time I stayed home, Why do they need to take blood test every day? Make sure you have loads of water and eat plenty of Khao Tom, rice porridge soup, 1
RobU Posted February 8, 2024 Posted February 8, 2024 As far as I am aware there are 3 strains of dengue fever. You can only be immune against one of them at any time. If you catch one of the other 2 strains, the initial immunisation for the first strain fails and you are susceptible to infection by that strain.

There are four strains of the virus: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. The disease spreads by the mosquitoes as they bite a host – who is already sick with the disease and still has a fever, 1

I do know you can only ever be immune to one of them at any time

Asked what happens if you contract it again, apparently, if it's the same strain, there is no effect within 2 years, but if it's a different strain, the symptons are twice as bad! The aching was the worst part, mainly in the back.

Luckily she did not need hospitalisation. But we had to work hard to keep the fever at a stable temperature. 1

Currently, Thailand has dengue vaccine that works well for ones who are 9 – 45 years of age First type – Vaccine for people who have previously been infected with dengue fever. This can be given to people 6 – 45 years old. In cases where there is no history confirming the infection, a blood test is required before vaccination. 3 doses are needed in total, each separated by 6 months. Second Type – Vaccine for people who have and have not been infected previously. This can be administered to anyone 4 – 60 years old without the need for a blood test. There are 2 doses in total, each is separated by 3 months. 1

TBF, that is a good price, bloody awesome price. I know people who have paid more than that for one night and over 100k for 4/nights, I wouldn't be surprised to find people here that have paid 50k for one night. Yes you will rarely see room fee for more than 12k but it's everything else - and absolutely everything - it adds up quickly. Even in the high-so hospitals they still barge (rightly so) into the room at regular intervals in the night to check on whatever machines and drip etc.. You still have blood drawn, and I'd rather have the light on rather than vein misses and arm swaps - you'll get charged for the extra syringe tip in these scenarios too if they don't get the vein first time - little things add up rapidly.. You still have dozens of lab tests on your bill. You still have have 300baht for joke and orange juice that you didn't eat but you didn't realized that was getting added on every 8 hours... You got a bargain mate!

I got it when bitten in the toilets of a Pattaya hotel, you could say a dengue dump.
freedomnow Posted February 9, 2024 Posted February 9, 2024 Read up on risks of that vaccine for your age and also take into account if you had dengue before..its a tad complicated on risks with that vaccine. I had it already and my fear is a 2nd time might lose me a limb or organs or worse.

There are many prices for hospitals accomodations, and St.Louis overcharged (IMHO) 500% at least. For next time I'll buy dripper and learn how to IV myself. it is no-brainer. Or get some help from friends. PS: 100K for 4 nights of staying in hospital with Dengue? Every hospital has some sort of luxury accomodation, suite, penthouse, whatever. So what?
