Accident Elderly Woman Drowns in Chanthaburi Pond While Husband Tries Bravely to Save Her
Picture courtesy of Komchadluek. An incident occurred in Chanthaburi Province, when a 78-year-old woman drowned in a pond beside her home while attempting to cut tree branches. Her disabled husband, aged 80, made a valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to rescue her. The incident was reported to the Sawang Katanyu Dhammasathan Rescue Centre, which dispatched volunteers and alerted officers from Mueang Chanthaburi Police Station to the scene in Soi Khlong Takhe 5, Khlong Narai Subdistrict. At the location, a single-storey concrete house surrounded by a mangosteen orchard, emergency responders found the lifeless body of Mrs Boonsin, 78, already pulled to the edge of the pond by relatives. After initial documentation by the police, her body was brought under the house’s eaves where family members gently cleaned off weeds and debris before it was handed over to rescue workers for transfer to Phra Pokklao Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Witnesses at the scene said that Mrs Boonsin, who had limited mobility but remained determined to assist in household chores, had told her husband she was going to cut some branches near the house. The pond lay adjacent to the area she was working in. Her husband, Mr Noi, 80, who is hearing-impaired and unable to walk, noticed her fall and tried to reach her by dragging himself across the ground. He managed to enter the pond and push her body toward the bank, but lacked the strength to lift her out. He called for help as best he could. Fortunately, the couple’s grandson had just returned from the orchard and heard the grandfather’s cries. He rushed to assist with a ladder but by the time he reached the scene, it was too late to save his grandmother. “If our grandson hadn’t come back at that moment, it might have been both of them dead in the water,” one family member said. Police confirmed there were no signs of foul play and have ruled the death an accident. Adapted by Asean Now from Khomchadluek 2025-06-24 -
