Just carry a large stick / golf club and stand straight whilst your ground has never failed me in me 58 years. More than one dog, swing the club in all their directions...the weakest will run with the rest following. (No need to actually hit them)

 The exception to the rule is a trained dogs which are trained to protect family and property no matter what.
Not many here thankfully.
