Microsoft has announced plans to establish its first regional data centre in Thailand. The tech heavyweight said this move aims to enhance access to cloud services.

This development follows Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's announcement of $1.7 billion investment in artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud facilities in neighboring Indonesia.

The company stated that the data centre will increase the delivery of Microsoft's extensive cloud services. Nadella, speaking at an event in Bangkok, added that the new centre will not only bring Azure's full capabilities to Thailand, but also provide top-notch global AI infrastructure.

Microsoft also mentioned that the Thailand data centre would benefit from business-grade reliability, performance, and compliance with data residency and data privacy standards.

Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thaivisin stated that the data centre aligns well with Thailand's objective to become a digital economy hub. The Prime Minister highlighted Microsoft's investment as a significant milestone in advancing Thailand's digital economy and boosting competitiveness. He also noted that the investment would spur economic growth.

Finally, Microsoft has committed to training 2.5 million individuals in Southeast Asia in AI applications by 2025.

Are 60 percent of Windows installations in Thai businesses still pirate?

No ...but they are still using Windows 95.

Oh good, just whats needed in a hot climate, a large data centre requiring electricity and cooling and pumping out lots of heat.

Therefore greater electricity consumption which we will pay more due to Microsoft.

My guess is that this will be the same as large corporations which need fresh water to create its profits.  Take public water, make water scarce, pollute it.  Less water for the commoners means higher water costs if water is available at all.  Privatize the profits; socialize the losses.

So - what kind of breaks does MS get on the massive amounts of electricity that will be needed to be sucked out of the current (soon to be "green" we're told) grid infrastructure to power an AI-based data center which need enough power to power a city?  I can't count the number of times our power goes off each year.  So I wonder - will MS get to tap into the current grid at a discount? Yeah? Do they get guarantees of consistent service even if the surrounding public areas lose power perhaps?  Less grid capacity means higher prices for the commoners?  Privatize the profits; socialize the losses?  Just wondering.

These public-private partnerships are often spun as a win for society but are more often a win for the rich and wealthy, and table-scraps for the commoners and the public in general.

The negativity is strong on this one.

Microsoft is the most valuable company in the world today. They could have chosen many places in Asia. The fact that they chose Thailand says a lot about Thailand and it's capabilities.

This is good for Thailand. It will creates jobs, expertise and credibility in Thailand to host a regional data center. Other companies follow Microsofts lead.

They will pay for their utilities, just like you do.
