Will B Good Posted May 14 Share Posted May 14 Had a dose of ‘man flu’ which has left me totally deaf in my good ear…….lasted for 10 days so far….can’t hear zip, nada. Anyone experience this? Did it clear up by itself? Did you see a doctor? What advice/treatment were you given? Did you try any home remedies? Tropicalevo Posted May 14 Share Posted May 14 Sorry to hear that. I have been 'half' deaf since birth and the thought of loosing my good ear does worry me. I have not had a total loss. Just a few 'problems' now and again which sorted themselves out. The bad bit for me is that the good ear has tinnitus now. Have you been swimming during your travels? Upnotover Posted May 14 Share Posted May 14 Any sign of wax? Drip olive oil in the affected ear for a few days then try and find a competent medic who can syringe it out. Not been swimming for a while…..had tinnitus for years now…..worked in heavy industry…..but the sounds I now have in this deaf ear are weird. A friend of mine, about ten years ago, felt a bit dizzy after we had dinner one day, and then his hearing started to go bad. In three months he was deaf. He never regained his hearing. More accurately wax can get pushed down suddenly. In particular seimming can do this. I don't know what dmdort of ear check you had 2 months ago but most would not dospecifically address wax. Sound test done by the doctor confirmed 100% hearing loss in one ear. The Dr prescribed some oral medication and complete rest and fish only diet. The Dr (an elderly lady) had captured my undivided attention when she said, its not the outer or mid ear, but perhaps a tumor inside my inner ear. Canceled all work and appointments and with the diet change I was back at the hospital seven days later, tested and hearing was over 95% recovered. I have Meniere's. The lead up to it was nausea, cold sweats, and dizziness. Then, the vertigo hit. Inner ear would fill with fluid, then pop and 2 to 3 hours of vertigo would commence. This went on from April 2017 to December 2017. Then, my hearing gradually went. All the time, I was on medication that eventually worked. Haven't had a vertigo episode since that December of 2017. Hearing cleared in 2018 to 2019. Now, I only have some dizziness when the weather changes. The point being: don't wait to see a specialist. I got treatment quickly. And I'm lucky. I'm basically okay. Woke up deaf in one ear the day before a flight to UK during height of Covid (remember how complex any travel was). Went to a well-known hospital in BKK to see if ear was blocked and flying would be a bad idea. Doctor said no blockages etc and wanted to admit me and inject steroids into my ear for a week. I declined and was instead given a sack of steroids and other pills to alleviate side-effects of said steroids. By next morning - without taking any steroids - hearing almost back to normal and recovered to normal within another day. A week or so later had another episode which also self-resolved in a day. No recurrence since then. Steroid treatment does seem to be the common course of action but I believe needs to start within a couple of weeks in order to be most effective. Injecting into affected ear is also a treatment option.
