Ever met a geezer like this in Thailand?

there's a bloke I know who frequents the red light districts in a popular tourist destination. 

he goes by the name 'Fred'

though I'm pretty sure that isn't his real name.

I have met him about 4 times now,

he looks like he's in his early - mid 40's.

The girls always make a fuss over him whenever he is in the vicinity.

you can hear them at all the bars screaming and shouting his name.

'fred...' freddy, how are you!!!'

'awwww, freddy ma leaw'

they all make a real fuss over this character.

then I found out why...

 

He came and sat next to me on a stool and immediately bought every girl in the bar a drink.

then he offered to buy me one (which I declined)

then he bought all the girls something to eat.

he also bought 1 of the girls some medicine from the pharmacy.

he stayed about an hour and then left.

apparently he does this on average once a month.

He will come down to the red light district and buy any of the girls whatever they want.

 

what motivates people like Fred?

have you ever met any of these characters before?

he was a strange lad when I actually spoke to him,

a bit weird, but the girls absolutely adored him

apparently he carries a wad of cash in his pocket everytime and spends the lot.

 

he wasn't much of a looker but he did have a nice shirt on.

I haven't seen him for a few weeks now, but according to the girls in the bar he still does his monthly rounds..

he's like the monthly santa claus for the bar girls.

they wont hear a bad word said about him!

In Hua Hin quite a few years ago an American guy who worked on rigs used to come into town and splash the cash, buying drinks, food etc for the girls, then take a few back to his place.

People like that are motivated by their own ego. When they 'make it rain' they don't care about those receiving the money. They want to be the center of attention, feel the power and fame. Giving an anonymous donation would probably have no appeal to them.

Possibly his ego is fuelled by giving to others.  Everyone is different.  It probably makes him feel happy.  Obviously if they don't give anything in return and show fake appreciation, then it's a bit false.  But if he enjoys it and views it as him taking care of some underprivileged people, then what's the harm?

 

Obviously, it would suck if they came over to him one day and he didn't get his wallet out and they immediately walked off and stopped paying attention to him.

 

It is possible that the act of giving brings him joy and he wants nothing in return, other than a thank you.

 

Some people even find joy in just making other people happy.  I think it all depends on how you're raised.

 

One problem is when someone like this encounters another person who is simply an unhappy person.  They can be quite upset seeing another person being happy and bringing joy to other people's lives.
