hi all...

i would appreciate if anyone can help me with a little advise. My boss is stationed in Chiangmai city proper while I'm outstationed (SEAsian countries) most of the time. I'm trying to convince him that it's better to make calls via VOIP than mobile. He's not tech savvy but is connected via TRUE Broadband on a pc. i'm on an apple powerbook G4 with pretty fast broadband. MSN Messenging is not feasible as his typing skills are not superb :o

what's the easier way for us to get into voice conferencing? VOIPdiscount does not work on macintoshs. Seems like skype is the only option for me? How's skype connections there?

thank you very much.

voipdiscount.com (unlike skype) is free, including thai mobiles. 300 minutes/weekly. After that 1 or 2 baht per minute on internarnational calls. Would work even on dial-up

If you're always calling PC-to-PC then Skype is a better option [imho] than a SIP provider like voipdiscount because of audio quality. Skype samples audio at 16KHz, double the sample rate of traditional VoIP solutions. Higher sample rates allow you to hear higher frequencies and improve speech comprehension.

For reference, CD audio is sampled at 44.1KHz.

If you want to call traditional phones then using a SIP provider, like londonthai recommended, will be cheaper. You can use hardware solutions and traditional phones or client apps similar to skype. Skype's audio quality advantage is lost when calling phones because the audio must be downsampled to the standard 8KHz.

less convenient than calling computer-landline/mobile is through google talk on gmail (free mail service offered by google). But their voice quality is not better than voipdiscount

thanks for all the advise. i will try to convince my boss so that we can save some money.

i think i will try skype. i read in some other threads about how horrible the skype quality is but i think it's more worth it than getting voip since we're going to make pc-to-pc (or rather mac-to-pc) calls and if we're away from the computer then we'll depend on the mobile.

thanks again everyone...wish me luck!!
