Vendor Discovers WWII Bomb While Urinating by the Roadside in Buriram
Picture from responders. The Ban Song Muang Rescue Unit in Prakhon Chai District, Buriram Province, received a report on December 14, from a local market vendor who discovered a suspicious object resembling a bomb. The object was found by the roadside along the Phachi-Non Charoen road, near Ban Nong Nam Khun, Non Charoen Subdistrict, Ban Kruat District, Buriram. Initial inspections by the rescue unit confirmed the object was indeed a bomb, though its exact type remained unidentified. To ensure safety, the team encircled the bomb with old car tyres to minimise potential risks and contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team for further investigation. Upon arrival, the Buriram EOD team identified the object as a BDU-33 aerial bomb, dating back to World War II. According to Sgt. Witheth Saelorat, an EOD officer, the bomb, while still functional, posed minimal threat as it resembled a practice bomb designed to create noise rather than cause significant destruction. The bomb was safely removed from the site and is now awaiting controlled disposal. The discovery was made by a market vendor who was driving to his next location. Feeling the urgent need to relieve himself, he stopped by the roadside and began unzipping his pants. However, he was startled when he noticed the bomb lying in front of him. He immediately fled back to his vehicle, abandoning his initial purpose. Chayanin Putthichat, head of the Ban Song Muang Rescue Unit, speculated that the bomb may have been deliberately placed in the open to ensure it would be discovered. “If someone intended to hide it, they would have thrown it into the water instead,” he remarked. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, and authorities have secured the area, emphasising public safety during the removal and disposal process. -- 2024-12-16 -
