Social Media
In a development that could potentially impact the case against former President Donald Trump, the judge overseeing his hush-money trial in New York City has flagged a concerning social media post. Justice Juan Merchan, who is presiding over the case, wrote a letter to prosecutors and Trump's defense team about a Facebook comment in which an individual claimed to have known the jury's decision before it was officially announced. The post, which has since been deleted, was made by a user named "Michael Anderson." The comment read, "My cousin is a juror and says Trump is getting convicted. Thank you folks for all your hard work!!!" This post was in response to a May 29 post on the court’s Facebook page, discussing oral arguments unrelated to the Trump case. Trump was convicted on May 30 on 34 counts of falsifying business records, with his sentencing scheduled for July 11. Justice Merchan's letter, which has not specified whether the post has been verified or if any investigation has taken place, noted that the court became aware of the comment last Friday. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office and Trump's lead attorney, Todd Blanche, did not respond to requests for comment. The revelation of this post raises significant questions about potential jury misconduct. Jurors in Trump’s case were under strict instructions not to discuss the case with anyone outside the courtroom until their verdict was reached. If the post's claim is substantiated, it could suggest that one or more jurors violated these instructions, which might have influenced the trial’s outcome. Although BBC News has not verified the authenticity of the post or the claims made within it, the situation presents a possible avenue for Trump’s defense team. They might request that the verdict be set aside temporarily while the matter is investigated. Furthermore, if they can prove that jury misconduct occurred and affected Trump’s right to a fair trial, they could move for a new trial. The defense could also ask the judge to question each juror individually to determine if any external influence impacted their decision-making process. Such a step would be critical to ensuring the integrity of the judicial process, especially given the high-profile nature of the case, which marks the first-ever criminal conviction of a former U.S. president. The post, reportedly made by an account known for trolling the social media pages of the New York court system, adds another layer of complexity to the proceedings. The incident underscores the challenges courts face in the digital age, where social media can easily disrupt the confidentiality and impartiality of legal processes. As the case continues, the defense team's next moves will be closely watched. Any substantiated claim of jury tampering or misconduct could significantly alter the course of Trump’s legal battles and potentially lead to further legal scrutiny and public debate about the fairness of his trial. The situation highlights the ongoing tension between maintaining courtroom integrity and navigating the pervasive influence of social media. What news would that be? That Trump's up in the polls, rappers and tech moguls are coming over in droves, and Team Trump has raised almost half a billion $$$ just since the verdict? Or is it that Germany and France are getting ready for WW3, Biden got caught micro-napping and and being led around by Jill at the D-Day commemoration, Israel isn't listening to him about Rafah, jobs for US born people are actually down (as are wages and hours and full time jobs), and Biden just admitted that he had the power to solve the border problem all along, exploding that 3+ year narrative? That news? BTW, proof that it's a scam? Just because a guy's profile photo looks batcrap crazy and he may (wisely) deny ratting his cousin out for violating juror instructions... I wonder how long the investigation will take. Because even if he recants, he may be doing it to save his bacon, along with his cousins'. All could have been avoided had Merchan done the competent thing and sequestered the jury for arguably the most important trial of the decade. More reversible error. You obviously don't understand the concept of the burden of proof. An unsubstantiated claim based on hearsay from an unverified Facebook user does not necessitate proof of a negative. The onus of the burden of proof is in your court.

And could have easily been prevented had the judge done the competent thing and sequestered the jury after testimony was complete, instead of sending them out into the community for the holiday. Making them pinky swear they wouldn't talk to anyone about the most talked about case in the country. What could possibly go wrong? Edit: Of course, Merchan may have had a hard time finding 6 empty hotel rooms, with all the hotels booked up for "newcomers" Edited June 8 by impulse 1
