If I want to get a visa extension to a 30 day visa exempt entry can I do that at any Immigration Office or must I do it at the office in the area that I am staying in at the time of application?

its not a visa extension, but a permission to stay stamp extension, 1.900 thb at any immigration office, but most if not all require a tm30 having been submitted

You need to do it where you are registered to be staying, or in other words, where your current TM30 notification has been filed.

OP, correct answers above.

You can do the extension any office provided you have a TM30 for accommodation in that area.

Added note: if you obtain extension in Bangkok you would attend IT mall LakSi

We helped an American guy do it at Samut Prakan. They said his TM30 printout from the hotel was not enough, they wanted the receipt from the hotel detailing payment. He had 4 forms to fill out, my Mrs did it all for him as being his first visit he was a bit lost. Being a black guy he had some sad stories of the way he had been treated here and said it was a bit like Georgia in the 60's.

Just another immigration office being difficult.

That should not be required.

What if I am staying at a private house? Same rules, local office?

You ask the owner of the house to file a TM30.

Yes local office to where you are staying.

As an aside should all my stays at a private house have been coveres by a TM30 or only because I want an extension?

Tourists that will be not dealing with immigration eg obtaining extension would have zero need for TM30

A TM-30 is REQUIRED within 24 hours of a foreigner staying at any location ... Hotel, Landlord, House Master, Possessor and You ( in certain circumstances ) should / will / can do.

There was a report about a post linking to the Bangkok Post.

The rule banning links to some publications has been retracted, so the link is now OK.
