I got my Fortuner in March 2005 and it is named on the Tabien Roht as 'Hilux'. The registration number and other details are OK. I queried with the Motor Vehicles office at the last annual road tax re-newal and they just smiled and said it doesn't matter.

From the front they all look the same, as long as it's registered and the numbers match good enough.

Not quite! Auto Fortuners (V-Model) have roof rack attachments, manuals (G-Model) do not. No Hilux/VIGOs have factory installed rack attachments.

So, the vehicle in your rear view mirror could be a Hilux/Vigo or a G model Fortuner.

Sorry. That should have read - 'So, the vehicle that just overtook you doing 160 kph could be a Hilux/Vigo or G model Fortuner'

Only my Fortuner would be the one in your rear view mirror!

My Fortuner was registered as a Fortuner....

Fortuner and Vigo using the same platform, thats why, its ok. biggrin.gif

So if you have a Ford Focus it is okay to have it registered as a Mazda 3 or a Volvo S40??? Same platform...

Whilst it may not be a problem now, it very well could be when you come to sell it. I would be wary buying an SUV when the registration book is for a pick-up.

Very Good point Muppet, I wonder if the Ford Everest (Ford pick-up) or the Isuzu Adventurer and MU7 (D-Max) are registered as pick-up's or the even the old Mitsubishi G-Wagon is an L200 Grandis pick-up

It would be good to know if the Tabien Roht (registration book) does distinguish between platforms

A mate in the office had the same query, his is registered as a Hilux.

Asked a few other owners and got, Hilux, Hilux Fortuner and Fortuner. So long as the VIN, engine number and reg. plate tie up with the documentation nobody seems to care :o

Regardless of the description HILUX instead of FORTUNER in the Tabien Roht the annual tax is at SUV level not PICKUP so the Motor Vehicle Department database knows what is what!
