Ive been here ain Surin a few years now, farming two areas. Before I came i read many threads on farming and realised you have an abundance of knowledge. I need to know the growing calendar for Surin. When do I plant my tomatoes? Please help me find some reference to when to plant. It seems that anything will grow anytime but many plants bolt or fail to fruit. Please help.

Generally, planting tomatoes during or just before the rainy season is just asking for trouble. I have some cherry tomatoes under a roof, planted in bought in soil, but I'm not hoping for much. I have lovely soil but I, along with others in the village, am unable to successfully cultivate any members of the nightshade family, apart from chilli. Probably verticillium wilt, which BScTreelove will inevitably tell you is due to poor soil management, and then recommend some exotic product from the USA. You do realise that mentioning specific members will sort of annoy people like me?

Generally in Thailand, there isn't a sowing / planting season, it's a matter of are you willing to water when necessary, is for instance, planting watermelons just before the long, dry season starts, a good idea? Sorry DrTree.

My apologies if I should not mention names. It has been a number of years since I frequnted this site and I only want to learn, not offend anyone.

I know that we learn from experiences and I only wanted to draw from peoples growing experiences. My extensive growing experience in New Zealand needs a complete rethink to succeed in Surin. The first year my avocado trees were drowned along with many other fruit trees. I dont have enough years, or resources to repeat these mistakes too often.

I'm still around here in Sisaket but still absolute rubbish growing tomatoes. Can I suggest you check out "Gordon Tickle" on YouTube. He is a Pom in Chiang Rai with the greenest thumbs I know.

I live in Korat, not too far from Surin, and I plant my tomato seeds around mid to late August, in the grow house where they are protested from the rain. Then, just as the rainy season is abating (early-mid October), I plant them out in the garden. After that, they really just burst with growth. About 2 - 3 weeks after planting the first lot of seeds, I sow a second round. That way, I can extend my growing season well into January and even mid February when temperatures start picking up. Tomatoes here need the cool nights to blossom. When the fruit starts growing, I spray them every 7 to 10 days with wood vinegar to protect them from insects. I also plant insect repelling plants like basil (Italian) or Marigolds to protect from insects.
