My C Drive Red.

Recommended Posts

Both my laptop and Desktops C drive is completely red, D drive on desktop is half full and on laptop almost empty, both happened at the same time, it cannot be a coincidence. Is it safe to keep using them until I can get someone to fix it, if only to surf the web or watch movies etc?

Probably full of cr@p, needs a clear out, you can also move stuff from C to another drive.

But I am guessing you are loaded with stuff that needs removing.

Use CCleaner and IObit Advanced systemcare for starters, both free downloads.

Open downloads in C drive to see all the stuff you don't need, which will be most of it. Just right click on each one then click delete, it will free up space. When that is done, run Ccleaner again to empty the bin...

There is other stuff, but try that first...

Thanks Trans, but will it be OK to keep using the computer while the C drive is red until I can get them fixed?

Maybe. But if your drive gets too full, then you won't be able to start your PC anymore.

So better fix it while you can.

Windows has a built-in program Disk Cleanup. That's the easiest and safest way to start with this.

I don't see why not, it is just telling you, you are near out of working space.

Try those 2 fixes, it's quite easy. 🙂

But do this now, just open DOWNLOADS, click on C that is red, then click on downloads, right click on each then left click delete, do it to all the stuff that is old etc, it will not remove the program, it will delete the download for it, you will be surprised..

He can do that, but it is much easier to use Disk Cleanup, which will clean up downloads and a lot more.

This is a sample, the sizes will be different on your PC.

I know, but I also know the OP, what I put forward is relatively easy for him without delving into the unknown..🙂..

Make sure you tick Windows Old Installation, theres a few GB. Uninstall ALL the programs/apps you do not use or need

If you use One Drive, move its location to your D Drive. Should sort things out

Oh yes, run C Cleaner or, as I use, Glary Utilities.

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows  and R keys at the same time to open the Run window.
  2. Type cleanmgr, then press ENTER. The Disk Cleanup window should appear.
  3. Select the drive you want to clean, then click OK.
  4. Click on the Clean up system files button and tick all the boxes available there.
  5. In the message that appears, click Delete files.

A problem with telling novices to install programs such as CCleaner, is that it will lead them to bundled installers. Installers that suggest that you install another program during the installation.

The normal version of CCleaner does this, installing a Toolbar. Why is this not mentioned?

The best way for novices to avoid this, is to use the SLIM or Portable versions: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner/builds

The best way is to use Windows built-in programs like suggested above.

Why use a 3rd party program if a good version of something similar is included in the original product?

And, if someone has almost no disk space left, then the worst thing you can do is install additional software. That should be obvious.

I thought agreeing with your suggestion was enough...

I have done what you said, but I understand there are some that you should not delete delete. Why should my laptop and desktop C disk fill up like that at exactly the same time?

I don't need nonsense like that. I least the others are trying to help me, so do me a favour and beat it.

Ok

here is the news

Running the disk clean will do no good.

You need to delete some of your big pictures or movie files.

Got it. :coffee1:

Ps or back the files up, you want to keep  to a new external drive or mem stick.

then delete off c drive.

Maybe I touched a nerve. :giggle:

indeed, to be honest anybody who is computer savvy enough to fill their hard drive knows full well where the delete button is,  Although many are not capable of removing "files" properly or completely.  Fortunately there's a few here who could point him in the right direction

if he just buys a mem stick with say 16 Gb space on it , copied that amount of files over,  then deleted the files on c drive.

he would see if c drive, was really full.

very cheap, test. an no date lost

Ps  His given very little information, so trouble shooting is a bit hard.

I won't give any more pointers, as he run he gob off at me.

most would have just laughed at the joke.

Quote

both happened at the same time

The same large download on both Laptop & PC  the same day ?

After you clean 'C' drive maybe a good idea to set all Downloads to 'D' drive

also if you check on 'C' drive should tell the size of each file + when it was downloaded  if your not sure on something big, could always send it to 'D' drive = you still have it but have freed up space on 'C'

also check on 'Start'  and see what was recently added
