Crime Two Korat Police Officers Dismissed for Drug Links
Picture courtesy of Workpoint. Two police officers in Nakhon Ratchasima have been dismissed from the force after being found to have connections with local drug traffickers. The crackdown followed a shocking incident in which a man high on methamphetamine killed his wife by bludgeoning her with a concrete pole. The violent killing occurred in Nong Rawiang, Mueang district, on 19 August and has intensified efforts by authorities in Korat to clamp down on drug abuse and trafficking, including government officials. Yolada Wangsupakitkosol, President of the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO), ordered an immediate crackdown within her own administration. More than 4,000 civil servants, staff and contract workers under the PAO will undergo urine tests to ensure no involvement with drugs. On the first day of testing, 329 employees at the PAO office were screened, with all results coming back negative. Testing will continue across provincial departments, schools and health centres, with plans to extend to over 40,000 students in 58 PAO-run schools later this month. “We are cleaning our own house first,” Ms. Yolada said. “If anyone is found to be involved with drugs, they will be dismissed immediately.” Meanwhile, Pol Col Kachain Setputta, deputy commander of Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Police, confirmed that authorities have identified 365 known drug dealers in the province. Of these, 60 have already fled the area to evade arrest. Police are preparing warrants to pursue the remainder. As part of the crackdown, two police officers were formally dismissed for colluding with drug networks and benefiting from trafficking operations. Senior officers have stressed that any official, found to be connected to drugs will face the harshest disciplinary action without exception. Authorities in Korat say the latest tragedy has reinforced the urgency of their campaign to stamp out both drug abuse and corruption linked to trafficking.
