Thailand's former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra, often seen as the real power behind ruling party Pheu Thai, has dismissed a lawsuit seeking the party’s dissolution as "nothing but baloney."

Thaksin, father of the current Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, remains unperturbed by this legal challenge, which accuses him of illegally exerting influence over the party. Due to previous convictions, Thaksin cannot officially be part of any political entity, although his influence has been undeniable.

The lawsuit, recently filed with the Election Commission, claims Thaksin's actions amount to an illegal control of Pheu Thai. However, the billionaire has waved off these allegations with characteristic bravado.

Thaksin's adversaries argue that his behind-the-scenes manoeuvres have significantly shaped the current Pheu Thai-led government structure. This includes pivotal decisions such as the appointment of former real estate tycoon Srettha Thavisin as Prime Minister and the allocation of key cabinet positions among coalition partners.

Despite the gravity of the lawsuit, the Pheu Thai ranks, including Prime Minister Paetongtarn, remain publicly unruffled. When questioned about the case, Paetongtarn offered no comment, reflecting the party’s strategy to downplay the issue.

Supporters of Thaksin and the Pheu Thai party claim the allegations are baseless.

They argue that Thaksin has merely been providing “solicited advice” to his daughter, as any father would. Official responses from the party uniformly dismiss the claims as legally and practically unfounded, though members often refer to Thaksin as “boss."

The Election Commission, an ostensibly independent body, now holds the petition. Past dissolutions of Thaksin’s parties, Thai Rak Thai in 2007 and People’s Power in 2008, were based on electoral rigging. However, this new lawsuit addresses different issues, primarily Thaksin’s indirect but pervasive influence.

Historically, Thaksin founded the Thai Rak Thai party in 1998, serving as Prime Minister until a coup in 2006 forced him into exile. The subsequent dissolution of his political groups and their reformation into newer entities have been a pattern, indicative of the ongoing political turmoil in Thailand.

It remains to be seen how the Election Commission will act. Still, Thaksin’s confidence and the Pheu Thai party’s apparent solidarity suggest they are prepared to face this latest challenge.

Am I correct in believing he is a convicted criminal and that there is still a charge against him that requires him to stand trial in 2025 ! If this is the case why is he allowed to interfere in the running of government.  I seem to recall that the Leader of Reform Pita was banned from any involvement in Thai politics for the next ten years only last month so why if I am correct is a convicted criminal allowed to influence the Government of the day !

Well in just about every definition of "pardon" which he has received from the King, all  rights are usually restored including the holding of office and any penalties associated with the crimes.  Of course TIT and those definitions go anywhere or nowhere.  Just as office holders have been convicted of crimes in other nations and not Thailand so they obviously can hold some senior positions too.  One would need to  consult the senior law folks here to determine what if any penalties still are in effect for the former PM.

Some people learn from their mistakes. Some people even learn from mistakes from others.

It seems Thaksin thinks if he does the same mistakes again and again that one day he will succeed.

I am sure someone will explain the errors of his thinking to him. It's just a question of time.

You just looooong for another coup, right?

Thaskin is a Convicted felon. The Pardon you ref to is NOT a Pardon it is a cert of Forgiveness, Pardon is a bad translation,

Thaskin will always be a convicted Felon   to overturn this he would need to go back to court with new evidence and put that before a judge.

and as a felon he can not hold a position in the government

I hope Thaksin will be jailed and his party removed and all the politicians who followed his orders should be banned for life or so.

Then maybe, just maybe, Thaksin and other will understand that the rules also apply to him.

But if the authorities don't do their job and let Thaksin and his party do what they want, then maybe others will remove him. Let's see.

And what about the coup makers and those who continuously spit in the face of the voters by dissolving the parties that get the most votes?

Never mind, their names are not Thaksin!🤣

No coup this time

The dynamics have changed, most notably the command of 2 crucial army units has been altered/transferred

Let's see. TIT, and allegiances change amazingly quick. But if you are correct things could get very interesting if the old guard don't have that option any longer when they once more are pushed against the wall by a populace that sooner or later won't take the naked power grabs any longer.

What was he saying before his TRT party was dissolved in 2006, and before his PPP party was dissolved in 2008.

The Man has been moving his chess pieces into place since day 1.

And I believe what is happening now is all going according to HIS plan which mainly serves to consolidate HIS power and secure HIS position.

You can't **** up something that's already ****** up beyond repair. You can only tear down and start again, but the old guard won't allow that, so they resort to coups and court decisions that are totally......well, you all know what I mean.

"Thaskin will always be a convicted Felon ..."  i am pretty sure khun toni sees it differently ... and he made it also clear, so all his corrupt and criminal dinosaurs-friends and even his emenys understand it this way ...

Just make sure not to invest too much of yourself, or your money, here in the banana republic of Thailand.

Thaksin is the only person who is responsible for what he did.

He got away with what he called "an honest mistake" and from then on, he thought he is invincible.

He enriched himself and his family and he broke many laws. And then, finally, there were consequences.

Thaksin could have been a decent prime minister, maybe for two decades. But that is not what he wanted and what he did. He was greedy, very greedy, more than anybody else. And he was stopped.

And then he involved his family members in his ego trip. And they had to feel the consequences.

And now it seems he wants to do it again. And it's only a question of time before there will be consequences again.

Thaksin could have avoided what happened 20 years ago, and what happens now, and all the time in between, by being honest and following the law. He didn't.

Thaksin was better than the rest of them.

Despite his flaws he made great progress and moved the country forward.
He didn’t get away as you suggested, he was exiled for 15 years as was his sister and his family suffered too but Thailand suffered along with corrupt imbeciles in charge.
He has return to resume his good work and hopefully Thailand can make up for the lost time.
I believe Khun Thaksin’s legacy will be a great one. I foresee him becoming Thailand’s foremost senior statesman. Taking up the role similar to that of former PM Prem and doing an better job

They are all corrupt pls dun be selective and cherry pick.

Thaksin perhaps the least corrupt of all.

For all his enemies can come up with for corruption is one feeble land deal.
And the drug killings most were drug dealers the rest were mostly associated/related collateral damage. Similar to hamas and Palestinian situation we have now.

you are a very ignorant person, read Thaskin history then try to justify the killing of family's, children

Lest we forget: His "war on drugs" saw 2,873 Thais dead in a matter of three months, from February to April, 2003. The victims included whole families, women, children and old people. In many cases, bodies were left out in the open in an almost ritualistic public display, to be photographed by an all too eager local press.

you are a sick person indeed if you think Thaskin is
least corrupt of all. read your history

Women children and old folks can’t be in the drug trade? For example the Mexican and Colombian  cartels rope everyone into the drug trade.
Thaksin is like a Robin Hood he may be corrupt but he gives something back to the people there wasn’t anyone like him before not previous governments and not the ones after who got rid of him by coups.
You claim he is not least corrupt then pls

come up with more evidence than a land deal which is what his enemies with resources at their disposal can only uncover

What a load of Rubbish you post

1 Corruption for selling forbidden national assets such as national utility company to a foreign entity in exchange for personal profits and kickbacks.

2 After the 2006 coup, the military junta-appointed Assets Examination Committee froze Thaksin's assets based on charges of policy corruption

3 Thaksin critics point to more examples of corruption: the Thailand Board of Investment's (BOI) granting tax breaks worth a total of 16.4 billion

4 corruption in the Suvarnabhumi Airport project.

5 Thaksin stock hiding case

6 Failing to disclose assets worth about 2.37 billion baht

7 Democrat Suthep Thaugsuban accused Thaksin of profiting from insider information about the government's decision to float the baht

8 Thaksin was removed from power, Chamlong Srimuang expressed regret at getting "such a corrupt person" into politics.

9 When the Independent Committee on the Casualties of the 2003 War on Drugs established by the Surayud Chulanont government published its report in 2008, it concluded that 1,372 of the people killed had no drug related records.

This is your hero!!!!   you need to read your history and be ashamed of thaskin
