Worm-Robber Bird: Could this "POKING of HOLES" do damage to my lawn?

Dear Folks,

 

There is a small flock of a particular type of bird which has recently begun visiting my lawn.

 

My problem is: This bird seems to be taking things from my lawn.

 

How do I know what this bird is taking away?

If it might be bad bugs that this bird is removing, then I am OK with it.

However, what if this bird is stealing good worms? Then how do I deal with it?

And, how to know…..For Sure?

 

This bird is not so difficult to identify. Its head looks like a pick-ax, in fact. And, it is mostly brown and ugly, with no bright colors. And, it does not talk much, like my beloved Thai Myna (mynah) Bird, major or minor.

 

Also, in case this bird might be stealing worms, how might I discourage this bird, without harming it or causing it trauma in any way?

 

What about a small scarecrow stuck in the center of the lawn? Would this work?

 

But then, if scarecrow, might this frighten away the Thai Myna birds that I am trying to coax ever closer to me?

 

Also, how much longer do you think this bird will hang around, provided I do not, in any way, interfere with its habits?

 

Here is what this bird looks like:

 

Does it make a noise at night?....

Like a bird call, I mean?

I like bird calls throughout the night, as they make me feel less lonesome.

 

Therefore, if this bird makes noise at night, then I will see this as a definite plus in its favor.

 

Any advice will be most helpful,

A very ugly bird , you must be looking at a different one than me,

it's a Hoopoe , a migrant bird to Thailand, I suppose poking holes

in your lawn will areated it , nothing to worry about , just enjoy the

beautiful and unusual bird.....

It COULD be beautiful IF it were not all.....BROWN...I suppose.

 

This bird belongs on a desert landscape....due to coloring, coloration, plumage...IMHO.

It's a Hoopoo. The sound is a repetitious poop, poop. It's aerating your lawn.

I saw my first one of the season a couple of days ago. On past performance there should be 4 or 6 of them around each day for the next few months before they disappear again.

 

Very beautiful and lovely to watch as they peck peck peck their way across the lawn-covered clay. I think of them as woodpeckers who are after a change of scenery. They certainly (at least to my entirely untrained eyes) look like woodpeckers.

I have completely changed my perspective and perception of these weirdo birds which enjoy poking holes in my lawn...

 

a.  I say, the more poking, the better!

 

b.  Also, I now think these birds quite beautiful, after having watched them, day after day, after day.

 

c. It seems to me, alas, that their numbers might be dwindling now, as they prepare to fly/migrate elsewhere.

 

d.  I, in fact, now, must tell you:  I will, most sincerely, be sorry to see them depart my lawn.....and....

 

I look forward to seeing them return.....
