Waves Destroys Homes on Libong Island: Residents Left Homeless
Another in the line of news where homes are built too close to the beach or on the beach. Yet again, they are calling for government assistance. Why is that? There are insurances, that most people in the world have for their houses, but not in Thailand. The simply reason for that is, people can not go after rules, which would invalidate an insurance or kill the insurance companies. The government has nothing to do with that stupid people are building their houses in risky and unsafe places. -

Thai police shut down 21 villas on Koh Samui, foreigners evicted
Luxury villa for 20,000 baht a month that alone should have rung alarm bells as you only get a tin shed on the islands for that amount -

Thai Funeral Practice of Lighting Cigarettes Sparks Online Debate
I don't think all villagers can. All I know is the 3 days prior to the cremation the deceased family put on food and alcohol for the rest of the village. I would think the cost is spread out with many family members. What is your experience of Isan funerals? -

The Bangkok River Level Thread 2024 - Post your images and local situation here.
Really nothing much going on for now. Latest high-tide at Pak-Kret Meanwhile, Madam has determined that we are building a 50cm "flood wall" for our downstairs area. It's actually part of the plan to enclose the area but that bit has been accelerated "just in case". A height of 50cm will take us over the level experienced in 2011 and is well above the 2022 flood level. -

US Navy introduces 'first gender-neutral submarine.' What could possibly go wrong?
Not a good idea having females on subs. I happened to watch John Wayne in the movie Jet Plane last night and something one of the generals ( yes I know he was only an actor ) said reminded me of this thread. Remembering the movie was made in 1957, it dealt with a Russian female pilot supposedly flying to the US to seek asylum. The general said "I'll never get used to females in the military" Had he been real, the situation now with women in almost every part of the military would have made his head explode! -

Truck Overturns into Jang River in Lampang, Driver Killed
One might wonder what the reason for this accident is? Sleeping, driving to quick, break failure and so on...... One thing we definitely know, is that it can´t be the drivers fault. Maybe the more modern excuse, like the GPS told me........
