Chiang Mai Floods Again: Businesses Battle Rising Waters

Chiang Mai is grappling with its second severe flood in a week as waters rise once more, submerging large sections of the city. Despite being slightly lower than last week's deluge, the latest inundation has wreaked havoc on communities and businesses, notably around the famous Night Bazaar, where streets resemble canals. Waterlogged roads have forced authorities to deploy large trucks for tourist evacuations to the airport.

Local businesses face mounting concerns as water levels, reaching 50-70 centimetres, threaten their goods. The Ping River, peaking at 4.81 metres, continues to overflow, affecting areas within a one-kilometre radius and flooding key infrastructure including all 13 buildings of police flats. With water and power cut, residents are evacuating, assisted by deployed boats.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is leading relief efforts, dispatching military personnel to assist and instructing officials to monitor water levels and install water pumps. Schools in the worst-hit areas are temporarily closed. In Mae Taeng, a notable rescue operation is underway to save 126 elephants, with 117 successfully relocated so far. As officials brace for potential worsening conditions due to northern flash floods, the urgency of relief efforts intensifies.

We have been staying on higher ground. Misjudged, so two nights were not needed out of the house but after having the warning flood horns go off in the wee hours last week .... Anyway, after the city center flooded we thought just maybe ... so went to check on the house in Saraphi this afternoon. The good news, some water in the Moo Baan but our house was high and dry ... bad news, looking at the water movement, it is coming in to the Moo Baan so ... we'll see. Last week it flooded up to the first of three steps (that would be level with the house flooring. It's a bungalow so no moving things "upstairs". If it is equal to last week or even to the second step I will count my luck stars. Sunny and dry today and in the week's forecast.

Guys it's the school holidays, all the government schools have already been closed for a week and not due to reopen until the end of the month.

Went to Chiang Mai Expats Club breakfast at Duke ‘s, Raumchok this morn from Doi Kham around Canal Road … no problem, high and dry.Thought I would return to Doi Kham area by way of the 2rd Ring Road … road closed. Swtched to Superhighway … road flooded. Switched to 3rd Ring Road … long line past Lamphun Road intersection, detoured toward Lamphun. Irony, ended up driving the river road through some water right next to the river (3 sand bags high along most of the way and some water on the road but not enough to stop cars from going through slowly). In afternoon, checked the house water on Moo Baan streets but our house was high and dry … then we noticed the water was slowly coming into our street … yikes! Just hoping it is not worse than last week when it reached the top of the first step. The third step is level with the house floor. Tomorrow should be the highest. No rain in the forecast and October should bring the end of the rainy season … no drought for farming and drinking water here!
