CNG and LPG vehicles face crackdown after tragic school bus fire

In a nationwide safety sweep, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) has ordered all vehicles equipped with compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tanks to undergo immediate inspection.

 

This comes in response to the bus blaze tragedy on October 1, which claimed the lives of 20 primary school children and three teachers near Bangkok.

 

The tragedy unfolded when one of three buses, chartered by Wat Khao Phraya Sangkaram School in Uthai Thani, burst into flames.

 

The ill-fated bus, overloaded with gas tanks beyond the legal limit, caught fire during a school trip to Ayutthaya and Nonthaburi, killing 23 out of 44 passengers. Officials were quick to act, with the DLT launching a crackdown on all vehicles using CNG or LPG, said a spokesperson for the department.

“Operators of these vehicles are required to bring them for inspection at Land Transport Offices nationwide, free of charge.”

 

The inspections will ensure compliance with safety standards, covering everything from gas cylinders and safety belts to fire extinguishers and emergency exits. Vehicles found with expired cylinders, broken parts, or gas leaks will be grounded until they meet the strict criteria.

 

The DLT has set an October 31 deadline for non-public transit buses, vans, and minibuses operating in Bangkok, while public transit buses and LPG-equipped vehicles must be inspected by November 30. For convenience, operators can park at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal while awaiting inspection.

 

In a bid to protect schoolchildren, the DLT urged the Education Ministry to avoid using CNG or LPG vehicles for field trips until safety checks are complete. The DLT will collaborate with schools to ensure safe transport and conduct safety drills before any future outings, reported The Nation.

No. It's not a start. It's just more reactionary BS to look good. Never happen in any meaningful way. TIT. Out of control bus crashes and kills 30  people. Brakes blamed. What happens? Nothing, apart from the driver being investigated/charged and money changing hands on the quiet. A true start will happen only when a progressive government is in control and hopefully can get rid of the endemic corruption in this country which starts at the top.

thailand faces one major issue: corruption! regardless of the area that needs urgent improvement, deeply entrenched corruption,

often passively accepted by many thai people, obstructs progress.

 

thailand's biggest battle was and will be against corruption, as everything is interconnected. without addressing or at least reducing corruption, nothing will improve in the long term ...  it has nothing to do with a lack of education or not existing laws; it's purely about corruption!

it's not a start because they are relying on the, already discredited, check and enforcement process and protocols, what is needed is root and branch reform, but that's not going to happen. in fact once the news cycle has moved on from this story absolutely nothing will change. it's all about optics.

CNG and LPG are safe used the world over it is only if the systems are not inspected regular and not maintained correctly that you have trouble,   Unfortunately your cry to stop using alternative fuel  will be on deaf ears

I am intrigued what is the check and enforcement process and protocols,  always thought that was environmental violations, also root and branch reform can only think that theses are America Idioms please enlighten me

don't get me wrong but you have to start somewhere, Yes there is corruption everywhere  but i believe Safety is the priority to save lives   and this is a start many more step to be taken before you can say Thailand has safety protocols and there are effective

I have a theory that there was a leak on them cylinder and maybe one of the kids was playing with a lighter which started the fire, the driver looked back and accidently hit the railing on the highway.

But the problem is these vehicles had seemingly been inspected or had paid people to say they had when they hadn't.

All to save time as time is money to these bus companies , just look at the amount of crashes there are due to drivers being exhausted or on drugs to stay awake for all the hours they are required to drive .

Like most things here it will be all show and look what we are doing to fix things for a month or two and then after that it will all be an afterthought until something major happens again.

Question…. What tpenalty did the motorcycle driver get who  killed the doctor on the pedestrian crossing?

I have a  Fortuner with duel fuel systems. The LPG system needed an inspection for tax renewal yearly.

All the shop on Sukhumvit Road in Pattaya did was just took a picture of my car, super imposed the picture showing a absentee man infront of my car. The picture was part of the document for tax renewal.

Nothing,  his sentence was reduced to home detention.

The Black mountain club fired that killed and burn many more than this bus fired involved just like here officials eas swept under the rug!

Prior, owner offered 50,000 baht to the dead family, the injure nothing nor did government lift a finger.

Like every story media never follow up with reports.

Sadly you are correct but it has everything to do with education which doesnt really exist in government schools.

People are given just enough to feel the government care to follow not to lead. That being said you can never rise up and threaten the protest in the past nothing as soon as the spoil brats are threatened it all goes away.

If you arent given choices how do you complain when one has no clue what they are missing.

So now they are using the meters to test, as I said they should/could, now make it law that all gas vehicles have a gas detector fitted, with a buzzer in the cab, they are less than $100 each. But of course the tests here are just cursory inspections, the air brake systems (should) have buzzers/gauges but they never test them. They never use jacks and levers to check anything either.

Well that will never happen... We've lived in other Asian Countries as well.. Such a shame and mind-blowing how they simply don't care how anyone or any vehicle is operated on any road way.  There's NO Law and order in Asia when it comes to Transportation Period. 

   Where do you start: No Driving license,

No proper Tag, No Insurance, No Noise level, No Passenger limit (7 on a bike or 25 in a 15 passenger van) No Driving In the wrong direction, No driving on the wrong side... I mean when you an ride your Suit Case on the highway (this litteray just happen google it) what does that tell you..  All I can say is 10 and 2 and drive safely my friend..
