I don't think Thailand suffered an uptick in crime due to some foreigners enjoying a prolonged stay during that special time. These foreigners also didn't qualify for any freebies that were to the Thai people's detriment. By and large, they spent money and seemed to have a great time (or at least a better time than they would have had elsewhere).

 

I think the Thai government's timing for phasing out the Covid extensions was perfect. Praise where praise is due.

Personally, I drank a lot of beer during my brief internment during Thailand's lockdown, primarily because travel and shopping was still significantly challenged by local restrictions. My non-exempt entry expired shortly after they closed the borders, so after a couple of covid extensions and getting a new retirement extension, I was out of here 1st June 2021.

 

Our overall spending was significantly LESS than normal due to Covid restrictions. It was amazing to see the surge of nervous squatters posting the unanswerable question of "will they still issue covid extensions?" on this forum towards the end of their current 60-day extension. There were PLENTY of opportunities to go home or elsewhere. I was offshore Malaysia (after serving their quarantine requirements) and back in the UK by September 2021 to get the Covid shots that were still a total lottery to get here. Came back here in November. After some surgery here in February 2022, I was back working in Sabah. That's where I was when the government ended the covid extension charade.

 

But maybe you were a milkman.

By the way, last time I was in Thailand I applied for the 30 day extension but after that I needed a few extra days because of my flight schedule, so they stamped this big "CANCLE" stamp in my passport. On my way out, the female IO at Suvarnabhumi looked at it quite closely, and began to talk to the IO next to her about it, and was scrolling through my passport for several minutes and after giving it one more long stare, she stamped me out.

 

Are they going to give me a hard time over this stamp when I come back 🤔

No. You obtained the stamp as you were on overstay "few extra days" 

It's common and no big deal however you had other options and now stamp in pp..

I did not overstay. I went to the immigration office, they asked to see my flight ticket, and then gave me 7 extra days. I paid 1900 baht for it.

I'm in Thailand, and came here visa exempt. The IO at Suvernabhumi just stamped my passport and said "visa". No onward ticket or anything else was asked at either of the airports.

Out of interest which airport did you depart from and which airline..

Can only assume io meant next entry via air have a visa rather than visa exempt?

Sorry it took some time to reply. Departed from the Finland airport Helsinki-Vantaa and flew with finnair.

Hey OP, I would take the IOs comment as the first warning, and would not push it after this with a new exempt (especially flying in). I dont think a safe service is needed if you have several months in between your trips, but certainly another visa. The DTV is one of the best options right now for us long stayers / "you stay too long in Thailand" travelers. 

 

And to those who have commented that the IO has too much power to deny entry. The officer will most likely ask for a supervisor to come and check the situation. Last time the boss came up to the booth and checked my tourist visa, said something to the IO, and then I got stamped in.

That's how I see it too. The first warning. I'm not sure how long I'll stay in Thailand but was thinking that if I stay over 3 months, then I just use the minivan service next time, or the safe entry service if flying back in. The latter option is more appealing.
