For anyone interested ....

I was getting tired of the slow waiting for Brave to open a page,  Opera was the same ....   I cleaned,  defragged,  optimized,  deleted ....  but still they were lagging.

So I found Carbon web browser .... based on the Chromium ...

Carbon is a free and open-source web browser developed by Carbon X Labs based on a custom fork of the Chromium web browser and its powerful Blink engine.

It is super fast,  it is super lightweight,    it is superb to use,   and makes opening webpages so much easier.

Be aware :    it's a 7z file,   so you need Winzip or 7-zip to extract and install.    I had some difficulty,  but finally got the desktop icon.

I won't be going back to Brave or Opera again .... that's for sure.       I'll keep them on my desktop though.

What browser do you use ?     is it super fast   ?

well I have to say I'm absolutely pleasantly surprised at this Carbon Web Browser.

It is super fast to open any page,  and the pics load almost instantly ... unlike Brave which took ages to open Yahoo news US with pics.

The problem with Brave, Opera & Edge browser is they have way too much stuff hanging off their engine, all the add ons slow them down so much.

I wished i'd had Carbon installed ages ago.

OP, you have posted about the "pros."  Do you have any idea what MAY be happening in the background that could be a "con."  (no pun intended)

Yes,  I can understand your question ...

I researched the safety and privacy aspect as much as I could based on reviews and comments.

It appears safe and secure enough.

It does have an LDX ( Liquid Decentralized Exchange )  icon in the tool bar at the top, however I just ignore it,  and I turned off the Carbon rewards and their wallet toggle.

How safe is Carbon Browser ?

Carbon Browser is a Web3 browser created with a strong focus on both privacy and speed. Based on the open-source Chromium framework — also the foundation for Google Chrome and other popular browsers — Carbon has prioritized a secure, user-friendly experience that is also extremely lightweight.4 Oct 2024

You may be right but just a very quick search seems to suggest tied to crypto houses (not necessarily bad) and only really available for the last year or so (in current format) on a pc.

Also slightly strange can find no "mainstream" reviews........

Personally I don't have an issue with Brave loading speed normally......YMMV

Yes,  as mentioned their is an Ldx icon at the top,  so I just leave that as it is.  I've checked background apps running in task manager,  i've googled all about privacy, safe, secure personal information,  and it seems that nothing is collected or stored by Carbon, it's just similar to Chrome browser but 5x faster,  and it uses way less CPU than the Opera's, Firefox, Brave etc ....

I had Brave for a while but really it was taking a while to open pages,  especially pics on news items etc ... I tried many things to try to speed it up but it still lagged.

This Carbon web browser is faster and not stressful at all,  no waiting for pages to load.

I shall keep researching into the use and privacy aspect of Carbon each day ....

I am not interested in the Chainlink mechanism of Carbon.

I use it without engaging in any LDK inter action ....

some further info ....

At the core of Carbon's product lineup is the Carbon Browser itself. This user-friendly and intuitive browser, currently available for Android devices with plans for expansion for iOS and PC, is built on a custom fork of the Chromium web browser and the powerful Blink engine. This combination allows Carbon to load web pages three times faster than other Chromium web browsers (e.g., Chrome, Brave, and Opera), helping users save up to 95% data.

Furthermore, Carbon partners with Eyeo, a leader in adblock technology, to custom-build a superior adblocking feature. The Carbon AdX Marketplace takes this a step further, creating an ecosystem where advertisers and publishers can engage in a sustainable value exchange without compromising user experience.

I haven't looked into removing / changing those homepage tab icons,  so your saying they're not changeable ?   that's not good.

Did you launch a www page ?  because I find it much faster and therefore less stress than Brave ...

Well, as common place on the internet these days, if it's free, then YOU are the product.

Happy to keep an eye on this thread with your research, and will also research myself.

My search engine is Duck Duck Go, which I use in more than one browser.

in this day and age of stealing data and emptying bank accounts, one better be aware and stick with the known one's ?

agree John,  and as such I am only using this browser for usual websites like news and such,  definitely no banking, password, login, no anything,   just surf for reading.    I must say it's faster than my Brave browser.  But it seems you can't change the home page block icons that are shown, which is a loser imo.

A page will load between  1-3 seconds using Carbon web browser.

Using Brave web browser it can take 3-10 seconds to load a webpage.

That's why I'm using Carbon for normal reading websites ...   I won't use it for login or banks or similar.

I downloaded this browser last night and find it quite slower than Chrome. It also looks like it is catering to crypro community, so a hard pass from me.

yes,  it seems to be for crypto with the exchange icons ....   anyway,  I'll use it for surfing the internet and reading news,  because it is faster than Brave on my PC anyway.  sorry you didn't get it as fast.

I use Thorium, should give it a try.

I tried to install Thorium in WIN 10 but it wouldn't install .... wouldn't open ... and after much googling the problem,  many other folks had the same issue... so I gave up.

Apparently,  to install Thorium Windows 10 you have to make sure it's the correct version ,  and that is dependent on what processor the PC is using.   so I guess I was trying to install the wrong version.

What internet provider do you use? I have no noticable lag in Chrome or Duck Duck Go.

There is currently no publicly available information regarding third-party security testing specifically for the Carbon browser. While the browser emphasizes strong privacy features like a decentralized VPN and ad-blocking, independent audits or assessments by cybersecurity firms have not been documented. Users should exercise caution and consider the potential risks associated with using a relatively new browser in the decentralized web space.

There is no information available regarding how often Carbon Browser conducts security audits. The search results do not specify any audit frequency or independent assessments related to its security practices. Users should be cautious, as the lack of transparency in this area may raise concerns about the browser's security posture.

Yes,  I see that caution ....   I use my condo wi-fi through my VPN.  My Brave is ok,  but it does lag when opening pages,  takes 3-8 seconds sometimes,

Carbon takes 1-3 seconds,  and even under one second sometimes.

As mentioned, I'll use it for now just for reading and news and general surfing,  nothing serious, no passwords or banks or anything like that.

I'll stick with Brave, I have all the time until I kick it. 555
