California doctor claims spicy Thai dish left her with chemical burns
They do ask sometimes "ow pet my?", do you want it hot? Answer, "ow" or "may ow". Want, or not want. Or "kee met", ie how many chilis, for eg som tam, larb, yam and geng. 2 or 3 is enough for me. Of course it helps if you're culturally savvy, at least enough to be able to know what hot is the average Thai, if such an entity existed. But tastes and cuisine vary hugely in Thailand, north, south, central etc. Many Thais don't actually like it fiery hot. And if you can say "I really don't want it hot" in Thai I think they'll hear you! And appreciate it too! -

Taxi Driver Arrested for Attacking Australian Tourist
Is this a "bad" story about a tourist who, by the way, was slashed.... I simply do not understand your comment about the tourist... do you have a problem with every tourist, if so, tell us why... Mr Tourist. -

Doctor Withholds Study Showing Puberty Blockers Didn't Improve Mental Health of Trans Youth
Kids are seemingly confused by the so-called "education" of today, no doubt. I think that this whole concept is disgusting. -

Why do receipts cost so much?
I am going to go to the UK for a month from next week. My next 90-day report is due in December after I get back. I will try and do the usual 90-day report online from that due date instead of 90 days after I get back as it might be accepted online, I will see what happens. I doubt if anyone is checking these things, it is just a means of generating money and creating jobs. It is the same with the re-entry visa, I have already proven where I live, have money to live on, etc while getting the one-year visa extension, and so when I went to get the re-entry visa I had to show some of the same things again, no new information, it was 1000 baht for the three officers sitting in front of me for thirty seconds 'work'. -

Non-DIY Solar installation
I’m thinking about adding solar to my house. I live out near Lake Maprahchan in Banglamung Chonburi. I’ve got 4 inverter aircon units, and my PEA bill is usually ~6K baht per month. Plenty of roof area and unobstructed sun exposure. while I appreciate all of the DIY info and ideas on this forum, I know full well that I do not have the skills to undertake such a project on my own. I’m probably looking at a hybrid system with at least enough battery to get me thru the usual power outages, if not take me off the grid 90% of the time. I have a digital meter, sadly, so no expectation I will be a position to sell power back to the utility. Any recommendations for contractors? Any particularly useful websites for me to guesstimate sizing? Any particular equipment types/brands to look for or avoid? thanks!! -

What happens in case of accident when foreigner has no PVT Insurance (only social security)
You probably won't be carrying your passport. I made and had laminated a wallet card. Gives the Thai SS logo, announces I have SS insurance, gives my number (pink ID card number) and the name of my designated hospital. So this stays in a window pocket to be seen the moment my wallet is opened. On the other side of the pocket is my pink ID card. I figure that'll do. The same method or something like it could be used to tell responders to take you a public hsp rather than a private, if desired. Emergency responders will have to know quickly, and obviously you might not be able to tell them verbally. In theory, if you'd best be brought to the nearest private hsp in an emergency, you could get emergency treatment and then a transfer to your hsp, both covered. -

And so the exodus of quality expats begins. This time it's personal
I also live in a high tourist area in the middle of Bangkok. But here are enough locals to have not only tourist rip-off prices. -

I'm proactively looking at retirement now. Currently swithering between Thailand and Philippines. Phuket never made it onto my long list after holidaying there 12 years ago (loved it), then 9 years ago (didn't love it due to the Russian influx and their negative impact on the Thais). Hua Hin is my favourite place so far, but more research to be done. Philippines? Not found anywhere I love yet (been to Cebu, Manila, Angeles, Kalibo, Taal and Palawan). A Filipino I know has recommended the Subic area (less typhoon impact, less busy but still got some life about it). Going to check that out next. -

What does a "closing door softly" Australian look like... your comment is very strange.
