Questions about buying second hand bike

Hi all 

Buying a second hand bike.

The shop insists on registering it themselves ,at a cost, and a 1 month waiting period 😱

Btw the bike is from a different province.

I believe I can do it myself in a day as I have done it before.

Any ideas?

 

Also....if I agree to let them do it, what insurance cover do I have during that period?  If any...

If they don't let you do things the way 'you want' then why buy from the shop ? - just don't deal with the hassle of something questionable. 

 

Theoretically, they can register the bike in your name instantly, but that means they will have to go to the DLT with you, or issue you with Power of Attorney documents (that give permission for you to register the bike in your own name).

I have come across this before, in most cases the reason is they don't have the green book, either was bought in auction, or was repossesed by bank, and green book is on the way... 

 

Ask to see the green book, if they have it, then it maybe other docs needed from the above to arrive for transfer... 

 

If all docs are there they usually do it quickly and can give it to you to do as well, but as usual Thais don't tell the real reason for what they do..., they think farang don't understand and we think they are the same ...!!! lol

Yeah..the bike is a repo'd one so the green book is probably not available at the moment.

It didn't occur to me to ask to see it.

They do have the number plate though.

Any idea about the insurance cover during the interim period?

 

@Rchardi_Smith....I have to buy at this particular shop because it's the only one that carries that model for many miles around. 

Re:Farang ownership... impossible out here in the provinces without a work permit or a 'cert. of residence' or wtf they call it.

After paying for the bike in full can you take home and come back in 1 month for the green book or do they want to keep the bike for the month?

what bike out of interest?

I'm lookin for a bike in UK, with a view to riding out east in the spring.....sadly looks a tricky route due to holding a passport lots o cuntries ain't fond of these days

I've transferred bikes and cars from different province same day at DLT. 

 

I can take it home on the day of purchase alright.

The question is what kind of  insurance cover I get for the interim period until I get the permanent number plate.

Any ideas?

Good, once payment is made leave with the bike.

I bought a 2nd hand Kawa two years ago in a different province, and it took me weeks to get the damn licence plate! Someone told me it was possible to do "something" in the province I got it from to speed up the process. I am sorry to say I did not get what that "thing" was. You should investigate it.

Bought a CBR in Pattaya. moved to Chaiyaphum 5 years later easy change at my local town.

Bought new Yamha R3 in Korat, made sure reg transferred  to Chaiyaphum, had to wait for a plate. 

Bought 2nd hand Ninja 650 in Korat, it were a repossession no probs transferring to Chaiyaphum.

 

Luckily I have a Thai wife who wants to see all correct, it can be done with no fuss.

I bought one used in Thailand from another district, got it registered on same day in our district on the way home.

Does anyone know a company that imports models that are not sold in Thailand.

I would like a Yamaha Smax step through 150cc scooter. They are sold in India, Malaysia, the Philippines and US I think and won scooter of the year in the UK.

Sometimes I wonder why people need something they cant get in Thailand. It is a small scooter god sake. Any scooter sold in Thailand is almost identical, just minor details 

 

On the other hand, if not imported and sold by yamaha, you cant get it in Thailand

Not True, there is a big grey market for imported vehicles here. If you can't answer my question don't reply.

sometimes people just wasting energy on something that is not possible, but please educate me about the grey marked when it comes to import of small scooters, and why one is a better choice than the other. We talking about minor differences, and most likely of minor importance for the purpose of a scooter.

If you are worried about the police and being fined for not having compulsory insurance, then I think the shop will give a contract of sale that probably is enough to say your waiting for them to finish the paperwork..., most cops should let you go..., some maybe more picky...! 

 

If you worry about having insurance that pays up if have an accident, I think need to leave the bike at home for a month until the paperwork arrive ...

I need it in case of an accident...as you mentioned.

Couldn't care less for a police fine.

Not in my province. Not without work permit...or residence cert.....or a Thai Mrs.

I have none.

 

Btw...I have decided to keep my current bike for a time.

Used bikes are dime a dozen!  but they aren't all the same, many like Mityon don't have use bike lots, if you need to buy one buy from a friend why as noted from the responses I would never buy a bike from a Thai or a Thai shop unless I have the book in front of me, even prior I look at the service book to see if it was service regularly majority aren't!  Many service book I view never serviced the ones that have been you noticed the ink and writing is all the same which the person filled in using the same pen all at once to update.

 

You look at the miles and compare it to the tires!  then if the bikes has all these fancy stuff like what a young boy or man would do then I pass cause the bike has been abused raced wheelies etc.. 

 

I rather buy new than from a Thai in general, give them a residential certificate month later I get the book etc...

didn't Thailand impose large import tarifs on such stuff???

if you fancy I'll meet up with you in India to buy a couple of cheap bikes and we can ride back to LOS

alas there is a civil war going on in Myanmar so errr yeah, probs not worth the risk

Since neither of the replies were actually in anyway helpful I will look into it myself. There are companies (agents) that will deal with the customs people to import vehicles.

Yes their is a tariff on motor scooters but it is not that much unlike cars.

enlighten us, what are the tarifs on scooters compared to importing 'other motorcycles'?

there are some crazy deals on 'lightly crashed' things in the UK, alas I heard that's an 'insider only trade' in LOS

edit: an agent will 'screw yer eyeballs out'...says the chap who imported FIVE brand new cars for himself from THREE different cuntries

Just in case you change your mind...the last bike I bought was new, so it didn't come with a plate or green book, but it did come with government insurance (“Por Ror Bor”)...the space on the form for the reg number was left blank...this means it is possible to get insurance without a plate.

 

And BTW, you can get a residence cert from you local immigration office, it takes a week to get one here (I'm on retirement visa, not a work permit)

Apologies late reply, regarding wrists..... riding around town they will ache, you need to be moving so the wind takes a lot of weight off the arms.

Only stopped twice, but, have Thai bike licence and bike is always spotless with tax showing, speaking some Thai on my way.

 

These bikes react to tuning, fit sports exhaust, an ECU flash/Bazzaz, R6 throttle, airbox mods you can easily release 10% more matching the Ninja400.

 

Now I have a Ninja650 which is more roomy.
