In a tense rescue operation, the police chief of Nakhon Ratchasima City, Colonel Sutthinan Kongchamdee, saved a young woman who was attempting to jump from a pedestrian bridge. The intervention unfolded at 19:30 on October 27, on Highway 2 (Mittraphap Road) near Nakhon Ratchasima Municipal School.

Colonel Sutthinan responded to a distress call about a woman, identified as Ms. Pim, a 23-year-old from Nakhon Si Thammarat, sitting precariously on the edge of the bridge with her legs dangling and clutching a fruit knife. From a height of approximately 5.5 metres, she warned passersby not to approach, threatening to jump if anyone came close. Police officers cordoned off the area, urging onlookers to refrain from taking photos or videos of the scene.

Emergency response volunteers and plainclothes officers began negotiating with Ms. Pim, working to keep her calm while requesting a safety air cushion from the Nakhon Ratchasima Municipality’s disaster prevention team. Authorities called in Ms. Pim’s boyfriend, who works in a local market, hoping he could help dissuade her from making the attempt.

Despite over 40 minutes of negotiation, Ms. Pim remained steadfast and visibly distressed. Noticing that she began shifting position to relieve her legs, Colonel Sutthinan seized the opportunity, swiftly restraining her. Officers nearby immediately moved in, securing the knife and bringing Ms. Pim to safety.

The boyfriend later revealed that Ms. Pim had been under immense emotional strain, having recently overdosed on medication, which had resulted in an emergency hospital visit just the day before. Before the incident, she had an argument with family members over financial issues, which seemed to have contributed to her distress.

Thankfully, the quick actions of Colonel Sutthinan and his team prevented a tragedy, bringing Ms. Pim safely back from the edge.
