snoop1130 Posted November 11 Posted November 11 A harrowing incident unfolded at Bangkok's Minburi Remand Prison, where six inmates brutally assaulted and fatally stabbed a fellow prisoner, Yutthakarn, using improvised weapons fashioned from prison materials. This grisly attack has raised serious questions about security measures within the facility. The attack took place near the prison's welfare shop in the fifth control area. Yutthakarn, imprisoned for assault and methamphetamine possession, was left gravely injured with multiple stab wounds. Despite being rushed to the prison's medical unit, he succumbed to his injuries. The assailants, identified as Narong, Panupong, Choktawee, Chatchai, Weerayuth, and Watcharapong, all have prior convictions ranging from drug offences to theft. With three fabricated weapons seized at the scene, their actions have exposed lapses in the prison's security, as these items were hidden from guards. CCTV footage revealed the attackers retreating post-stabbing, yet they were swiftly contained within the restricted prison area. An internal conflict among rival drug gangs, Ban Nong Chok and Ban Romklao, was cited as the motive. The attackers' ties to Ban Romklao and previous feuds with the victim's gang, Ban Nong Chok, led to this fatal confrontation. In response to this violent episode, the Department of Corrections is not only escalating charges against the six inmates but also launching an investigation into the prison's oversight. Efforts will focus on uncovering concealed weapons and evaluating the role of guards in potentially allowing such violent acts to occur. The tragedy underscores an urgent need for enhanced security protocols to prevent a recurrence of such violent events within prison walls. File photo for reference only -- 2024-11-11 4
Mason45 Posted November 11 Posted November 11 When I'm back in my Minburi home I drive past there regularly along Suwithawong Road to do my shopping. It appears to be a very peaceful place and one wouldn't know it's a prison except for signage on the main gates. I had refurbishing done by a father and son several years ago. The son told my wife he had spent time there and he always feared the gang related violence there. It's same old story of Thai " hard men " needing 6 armed guys to fix up one. 1 1

Frankie baby Posted November 12 Posted November 12 If the films & books are anything to go by, the prison staff are the most corrupt in Thailand. However this prison is only a remand center. The inmates most be gearing up for the full shi-bang if transferred. 1
Popular Post RethairedJarhead Posted November 12 Popular Post Posted November 12 The piece omits the usual advisory… Authorities have urged inmates to avoid confrontational behavior, and to settle disputes peacefully, particularly where emotions can easily run high. 1 4

renaissanc Posted November 12 Posted November 12 They have now ensured that they will be in jail until they are very old, so old that their family members will have died and they will have no place to stay when they are released. Moreover, no relation will want to have anything to do with them, especially when they are released at the age of (70 or so). 2
renaissanc Posted November 12 Posted November 12 Six people to kill one man ... maybe with their drugged-up minds they thought that the 20-year sentence would be divided into 6 per person so it would not be a problem for them. 1
crazykopite Posted November 12 Posted November 12 How many to a cell is a big concern unlike UK prisons where they have a life of luxury 1

I doubt they would even do five years ! 1

The need to decrease severe prison overcrowding coupled with the annual amnesty's means they'll be out after 10 years at the most.
black tabby12345 Posted November 12 Posted November 12 (edited) This grisly attack has raised serious questions about security measures within the facility. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contrary to what the article writer mentioned, it doesn't really surprise me. Even in the first world, violence can erupt behind bars among the rival criminal gangs. As well as a result of the feud between individuals. And inmates well know about security cameras' blind spots. And generally, criminal offenders are often known to have much lesser stress resistance than those outside the wall. So why it cannot happen here? Edited November 12 by black tabby12345
