Little Minds come from Minuscule Screens?: Ever wonder what's wrong with kids today?

I would never let a 4 year old have a tablet. They should be playing outside, not rotting their brain looking at cr*p on U Tube.

My kid learned to read and write English from using a smartphone and tablet.

Almost no input from me, and none from his schoolteachers, all by himself.

Now he's as good at reading and writing as any 13yo English schoolkid.

An hour or two per day will not harm him, and cannot play outside if it is pi55ing down.

There are Educational things on You Tube, not only cr4p.

I was speaking of using 4 screens for reading books, only, and mostly for research purposes.

Of course, if someone like you might use your 4 screens to play FOUR computer games, simultaneously, then...

This would soon overwhelm almost anyone.

Where would most 'normal' people have room for 4 x 32 inch screens. Talk sense please.

Just use a 49 inch ultrawide from samsung, 4 screens in 1, 60W electric average reasonable too. The 34'' uses 30W.

Or a 55 inch telly, as I do.

Not good for my purposes.

I prefer to have books separated, same with spreadsheets, etc...

one per screen....

But, I guess that the Samsung would be good for graphic design.

I have seen this screen.

Never used it.

Also....

image.png.cfb5f2a8f2e13ecd2ad63ddb83286bcb.png

MY three 27 inch screens, attached together...are larger.

Also, i would not buy a Samsung display.

I have 1800 mm x 240 mm of screen using 3 27-inch BENQs

So....

This is really a NO-BRAINER....

Anyone who buys one of these Samsung Ultra=Wide screens is  sort of an....

IDIOT.

Three 27 inchers add up to 81 inches, nearly 8 FEET. You'll get neck ache turning your head from full left to full right.

Fortunately: It looks to me like they are using a RUBBERWOOD door....of which I do approve.  Unfortunately:  This door is not properly finished.  Also, there is only a single door when anyone knows you need at least 3 or 4 doors....in order to set up a good workspace.

What is a RUBBERWOOD door, of which you say you need 3 or 4.

This is true.

This is a problem.

This is why I have a swivel chair.

One with wheels.

BUT:  A 27 inch screen is measured diagonally.  So, not a full 27 inches horizontally.  ALSO.  The left and right screen are angled, which further reduces the total lateral distance of three screens.

Still, you are correct. This can cause neck strain if one is not careful.  Move your entire body, not just your head....

Rubberwood doors...as I posted in the DIY forum, not too long ago.

I use these as computer tables.

Similar to what is pictured in this Topic.

Rubberwood works well.

Available from local door and plywood suppliers.

I always buy the largest size doors.

I am using 5 of them, at the moment.

(Sorry, I meant 6. I am using 6 of them at the moment.)

Dear Friends,

Ever wonder why kids today can’t think straight?

I will tell you.

Kids today spend most of their useless days staring at miniscule screens, all the FING livelong day.

What do you imagine this might get one?

ZERO….

That’s what!

Just a moment ago, I tried to research some unimportant topic.

But, I tried to do it on a miniscule phone, an A55 5G phone.

Where did that get me?

NOWHERE, that’s where.

I am only saying that…when I was a lad….

And when I wanted to do a bit of research…

I would head to the nearest library…

I would search for about 10 or 20 pertinent research books….

Then, I would spread out all these books on a very large library table…

And go to work.

Even today, I use a minimum of FOUR FING Computer screens, not one less than about 27 inches, diagonally measured.

And then…I just go to town on researching whatever it is that I am trying to uncover.

So…I am just saying that I FINALLY have found out why kids today are so FING ….

STUPID.

The reason is that they spend most of their time staring at miniscule screens which….ONLY…

Provides them with just ONE FING PERSPECTIVE….for FING SAKE!!!!!

Really bugs me just how FING asinine this type of “research” is….

No FING….WAY….anybody…no matter how intelligent….could POSSIBLY research ANYTHING….on a FING tiny screen…. Simply IMPOSSIBLE….!!!!!!!!

Am I RIGHT?

Or, am I RIGHT????

Do you agree with me???

For FING Sake?

Someday…

A Real Rain is Going to Come….

And clean away all this MAGICAL THINKING……

Best regards,

But…perturbed, just a bit by all this nonsense….

Gamma

Note4:  EVEN using an Apple laptop is NO WAY to do any meaningful research ... .there is just not enough screen space on one lousy screen to open all the books you need to make comparisons in real time……

Doing research this way is a complete FING JOKE….in fact.

Go to the library, and spread out a dozen books in front of you….

Or, at the very least:  Buy a minimum of FOUR FING 29-inch screens….and a super-computer, such as I have…and then…..

GO TO TOWN!!!!!

(And, don't let the pimps from Apple...get in your way.)

instead of asking whats wrong with the kids you shold be asking whats wrong with the parents, that will give you all the answers to your questions . good luck

No, I don't agree.

My parents told me the same when I listened to Chubby Checker, Beatles, Stones aso. Loud as possible. They called it "Hottentots" music.

Every Generation got their own fetish.

I agree with you. The kids today spend all their free time with their heads over a screen. Of course there are others here that disagree with you but maybe because that is also what they do all day.

I have recently heard the same view expressed by a barrister and an unconnected senior partner in a law firm that their new trainees are miles better than they were at their age.

Indeed...   Education is better, grades are better (in most cases)...  Kids have more access to resources...

Sure, there are a visibly minority, the outliers who are poorly behaved and more noticable, but isn't that true of any generation ?

Every generation also has its 'miserable boomers' who berate later generations and claim they are devolving - if any of that were true we actually would be 'devolving' rather than developing at the astronomically fast rates we are....

There is a saying... 'just because the 100m record gets broken, 100m doesn't get any shorter"...

.. and the same is said of education, because more kids do better, it doesn't mean exams are getting easier - it means teachers are getting better at teaching, kids are getting better at learning.

If you want an example of that - Try the 11+ Examination...

Given the evidence from this forum, its clear that many would seriously struggle...

... just take a look at the non-verbal reasoning questions - and remember, these are for a 10 year old.

Or... maybe they (we) disagree because kids don't spend 'all their free time with their heads over a screen'...    thats just the typical 'boomer complaint'...

Sure.. kids spend a lot of time using a screen... Computer, iPad...  there is also VR now...  Amazing resources which if used well provide outstanding educational benefits with fantastic Apps..

Parent guidance can be an issue - some parents allow their kids to 'watch trash' all day long - or thats the common complaint... And you may see some kids when going into a 'mom-n-pop' shop buried in the phone, but thats not a fair example of all kids.

You may even go to a restaurant and see kids on a phone - I don't think thats abnormal.

We go out for dinner a lot, we eat, we talk, we have fun... But at some point, adults will want to talk with the adults and the kids will want to play - they can get together at the end of the table and play some games on the iPad - they shouldn't be forced to sit there and just talk with each other.

100% this...    Poor parenting in any era impacted kids.

Back on Topic, if there is a Topic....

It's very unlikely that the use of a tiny screen on a phone might be of any use in doing any meaningful research into any topic of import.

The smaller the screen....

The narrower the mind....

This is my thought for today.

The bigger the screen poorer the eyesight

what’s your point?

Posted (edited)

While the post may not be as coherent as it could have been, it is an interesting point and it's an important topic. I think in general a lot of people have lost the art of parenting. When we grew up many of us got a lot more support from our parents than kids do these days.

Of course the other difference is we played outdoors, we played sports, we engaged in all kinds of activities other than spending all day on Tik tok and Instagram, which is probably the least productive activity any human being can engage in. There's no doubt that screens and social media are dumbing down the population and there's no doubt that gen Z and those younger than gen Z are some of the scariest people, and perhaps some of the weakest people to have ever walked the face of the earth.

There are exceptions of course, the cream is always going to rise at the top, and the top several percent of the population within those groups are going to find a way to rise above the negative influences affecting them.

When people think of civilisation, they typically think of increasing technological sophistication. That has always been a part of what anthropologists examine when they write about different civilisations. But they’ve always gone much beyond that to look at other attributes of society, most notably temperance and disposition to co-existence. One does not have to be an anthropologist or sociologist to notice that both are generally static or in decline worldwide.

Today the echo-chamber is largely housed in social media, where groups reinforce each other’s grievances without rebuttal or critique. It has the effect of compromising rationality, even of otherwise rational people.

In general this would not be a time that I would want to bring a child into this world.

When my son turned 14 he asked for a new/upgraded computor system  for A..   school work, research and also pleasure  use.

He was already accessing info using a mobil phone..

So the solution ..  "If you want it,  you have to research the info and build it yourself."   and that he did ..  every component hand selected and installed in the chasis of his choice.. plus 2  stock monitors,  by himself. ( with me watching )

Today at 20 he is running and supervising the audio and lighting ( all computor controlled ) for his college campus theatre productions. He's also has a natural talent for painting and sketching, with several of his works receiving awards and display.

We still video chat at least 5 days a week ..  and there are always 1 or 2 "live" guitar sessions so I keep him on his toes.

... and he really digs Hendrix !

There was never a lack of hands on life info ..  using tools, doing manual work indoor, outdoor, carpentry, electrical, plumbing and plenty of exercise , and I taught him how to use and respect firearms.

But most of all..  using your brain to find solutions.

So bottom line.... kids have it in them .... you just need to be involved and help nurture their development

I watched Mickey Mouse and read the Beano comic when I was a kid, did me no harm.

Played Cowboys and Indians, but I never shot anyone.
