Father and Son Die in Motorcycle Crash During Test Ride of New Bike

A father and son lost their lives in a motorcycle crash on November 26, while test-riding their newly purchased motorcycle. The incident occurred around 15:30 near Ban Mae Pim, Tom Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phayao Province.

 

Police Lieutenant Raviporn Inkhum, an investigator at Mueang Phayao Police Station, responded to the accident alongside doctors from Phayao Hospital and local rescue personnel from the Mae Pim Subdistrict Municipality.

 

At the scene, a motorcycle with no license plate was found severely damaged after crashing into a roadside post and subsequently hitting a tree. Debris from the motorcycle was scattered across the whole area.

 

Lying near the wreckage was the body of Mr. Supakorn, found lying face down in a pool of blood. Nearby, the lifeless body of his 13-year-old son was also found, on the road and covered in blood.

 

The father and son had recently purchased the motorcycle and decided to test-ride it along the road where the crash occurred. Unfortunately, they lost control of the bike and collided with the post, resulting in the fatal crash.

 

Authorities have recorded the details for further investigation.

I think it's a BMW 1000RR, which would explain why it wrapped itself around a tree in the hands of an idiot.

New bike. High-performance. First time? Have a 13 yr old PASSENGER? A passenger can control the bikes trajectory. Kid prolly got scared dad was hot-dogging, moved around to look at where they were goin....The mom/wife must be just devastated. Can't even kick her husbands ass for being stupid.

This is the kinda <deleted> that pisses me off.... We have the people in cages trying to kill us.... they don't need your help, man! AND kill your son in the process.

Just my best guess after 200,000 miles on big  fast bikes.

Such a sad and avoidable outcome. There really is no place for big bikes like this in Thailand. The safety training and rider testing is one thing. The roads, hazards and other road users are something else. A big bike like this can do 100+KMH in second gear, in about 4 seconds flat - keeping the front wheel on the ground can be a challenge. Top speed of circa 200kmh. Tragic loss of life and devastating for the family.

From other photos he was in a sharp corner, with well marked red stripes for slowing down, just dumb on so many levels. More than likely going way too fast, no experience on a bike with this much power, and went too wide in the corner (typical new rider mistake), he actually crashed on the opposite side of the road.

Try more like 2.8 seconds, this bike is a race bike, not a bike meant for anyone without the skills to ride it (which negates all Thais).

I can’t understand why these bikes are road legal?

 

There is no point building bikes that go this fast unless people want to break the law.

 

Same with fast cars for the road. 
 

I am not saying it is not fun and thrilling to drive at over 200 kmh. 
 

But if manufacturers stopped making these fast weapons the road toll would undoubtedly be reduced.

It's an extremely uncomfortable bike to ride for any amount of time, and it begs you to go fast, driving slowly (speed limit) on it is actually a pain in the butt. This bike really has no place on public roads, its meant to be run on a race track at speed, not tooling around town. Most people who buy them for the street end up getting sick of them and trade them in on a more road friendly bike.

I have a Ninja 650 and Kawasaki brochure advertises my machine 0-100Kmh 3.54secs, the rev limiter cuts in at 160Kmh in 4th and my bike is only a medium sports tourer. Photo shown below.

 

These BMW 1000RR are out the box track bike, under 3 secs to 100Kmh and electronically limited to 300Kmh, it has 205hp from a 999cc 4 cylinder, not a bike for a novice.

Going wide around a bend tends to have a novice take his eyes off the road and see a post, this is called "Target Fixation and you hill hit what your staring at.

 

I am 69, raced production class bikes in the 70's, but, I would never just jump on a 1000cc bike with my son on the back showing off. All my bikes are single seat so any errors on my part only affect me.

Agree, those fast bikes are really a weapon on the hands of the inexperience. A 200HP bike on the city, you have to treat the bike as a weapon.

 

I did the same, had a Yamaha XSR900, a beast of a bike. Didn't ride as much as I did on the CB500F (10K vs 68K km.)
To be honest, I had fun with the CB500 a lot more, it's a much more forgiving bike, you make mistakes, it's normal, but I want to ride again tomorrow, so I sold the yamaha

My back won't let me enjoy most sport bikes anymore, and for Thailand, if I wanted a go-fast bike in town I would more than likely go for something like a KTM Duke R, a Ducati Hypermotard, or maybe a little more sedate Ducati Monster. But my wife made me stop riding, so all of them are out for the foreseeable future 😉

Absolutely! Joking apart I have a Z650 and a KTM Duke 200, the Z is a good touring bike for me, plus its very low as I'm a short arse, the KTM is a pocket rocket, great for the twisties up here in Chiang Mai!

I was driving a Suzuki SV650X, but my aging back didn't agree with the riding position (clip-ons), and I got sick of the horrendous turning circle. If I had it to do over again, I would've bought the KTM 890 Duke, would have been better for me, and maybe I would still be riding.

There is many nice roads for big bikes in Thailand, you just need experience, respect, and also good skills, as well instincts, and also learn the basics in thai traffics, expect anything to happen, and also a bucket full of luck. 

 

This accident is not about riding motorbikes in Thailand, it is about pure stupidity.
