If you look at that quote from Trump, it's clear it was vetted and worked over. Not an off-the-cuff remark. And with your kind of reasoning, it's pretty much possible to explain away any statements anyone makes on any issue. "He didn't mean that" really doesn't cut it.

When I was a kid, I had a friend who claimed he had the rule book and when a sports dispute arose he would cite one of those alleged rules, which, oddly enough, were always in his favor.
