American on Dirt Bike Kills Thai Woman Crossing Road in Chiang Mai

An American riding a dirt bike struck and killed a Thai woman crossing the road in Mae On District, Chiang Mai. Tearfully, the tourist knelt to apologise to the victim’s family at the scene.

 

On January 2, officers from the Mae On Police Station received a report of an collision involving a dirt bike and a middle-aged Thai woman. The incident occurred near Ban Sahakorn in Mae On Subdistrict. Emergency responders from Wiang Fa Mae On Rescue Team and medical staff from Mae On Hospital were dispatched to the scene.

 

Upon arrival, officers, including Pol. Col. Chakkarin Adsongpongphana, Chief of Mae On Police Station, and Pol. Col. Damnoen Kanong, Deputy Commander of Chiang Mai Provincial Police, found the victim, later identified as Mrs. Kia Saewang, 58, lying unconscious in the middle of the road. Rescuers attempted CPR and rushed her to Mae On Hospital, but she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

 

The rider of the dirt bike, identified as Mr. Philip Morrow, 38, from the United States, tearfully knelt and apologised to the victim’s family, visibly distraught over the incident.

 

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mrs. Kia was crossing the road to dine at a restaurant on the opposite side when the dirt bike, traveling from Huay Kaew Subdistrict, collided with her. Mr Morrow was riding his dirt bike alongside his friend, who was on another motorcycle.

 

Police took Mr. Morrow into custody for questioning at the Mae On Police Station. Further legal proceedings are underway to determine the next steps, but Police have indicated they will charge him with reckless driving causing death.

If I had a nickel for all the assumptions I hear on this forum I could run against Trump in the next election. He may have been driving straight, at a normal speed, and the woman could have walked across the road without looking, which I see daily here all the years I've lived here. The only evidence that could judge this is CCTV. They're quick to decide against foreigners regarding traffic incidents here, which is prejudiced thinking before any evidence is there.

And I and most of the others here see daily bad driving by locals. I've been a driver most of my life, as a job, and put in millions of miles since I first started driving, and have never seen more bad driving in all of my life until I moved here, and I was born in New Jersey, where many consider it a place where bad driving happens a lot. It's defensive driving there. here it's pure incompetency along with lack of enforcement that has more die each day than about anywhere on earth, yearly.

So many people come to Chiang Mai so they can rent motorbikes and go speeding around without any risks of repercussions like back home. I see them all the time and it gets worse every year.

 

Chiang Mai thanks to its international airport is like a portal which can transport turds from the most far-flung reaches on the earth and throw it right in your face. Some random women living her life in the outer regions of Chiang Mai now has to be worried about literally anyone anywhere in the world arriving in her village and driving like a lunatic.

We don't know anything about this case, the women could be at fault. Point is there are swarms of people (including Thais from s*holes like BKK) driving like maniacs also. There's a culture of this here.

 

Farang on dirt bike on Mae On fits a profile too. Just looking at that guys face I've seen these people before. Very good chance he's to blame here but we'll probably never know.

It's amazing how quickly the RTP can charge a farang with these types of crimes, yet when a Thai commits them it's just business as usual..

 

There are still a lot of questions that need to be answered, including the following:

 

Did he have a licence?

Was he speeding?

Did he have insurance?

Was the bike road legal at the time of the incident?

Was he under the influence of alcohol or any other drugs?

Was the woman crossing the street at an appropriate place, ie, a crosswalk, or was she just crossing at a random spot without looking both ways?

 

These are all questions that the courts MUST get the answers to if the police do indeed charge him with such a serious crime.

 

Everybody should be entitled to a fair trial and due process no matter the seriousness of the case. I just hope that the RTP conducts it's investigations properly and impartially (wishful thinking, I know...)

When you reach a certain age, you usually have enough wisdom from all of your years to not assume you know anything about a person from their looks. One example of this is Ted Bundy, who murdered at least 35 women and got away with it because he looked like an average man. Farang on dirt bike meets no definite profile besides a love for dirt bike riding. There is no way to judge this unless you were actually there watching it unfold.

Hey, the women was walking and he was riding a machine. What about that don’t you understand? Apply some wisdom. Pedestrians have the right-of-way where we come from and here as well.

That would depend on where she was crossing the road.

 

At a crosswalk when the lights are on red then yes, that is correct.

 

But as of yet we don't know where she attempted to cross. Pedestrians have no rights at all on main roads unless they use the designated crossings.

That reply from you was copied and pasted from my thread that I started after I was nearly knocked down by a Thai motorbike driver who was driving on the sidewalk.......

dude I'm so sick of these people. It was just the holiday season and they swarm me this time of year. 

 

I did see some Thai guy on a big bike hit a pickup truck (both of them on driving in the middle of the road around a bend) and broke his leg. 200,000 baht to repair his B&M bike too (I knew a family member of his). F*k that guy. Many such cases.
