Bangkok's New Plan: Beat Traffic with a Congestion Charge
Traffic in Bangkok | Photo via ThaiResidents.com In an effort to tackle chronic traffic jams and pollution in Bangkok, Thailand plans to introduce a congestion charge in six high-traffic areas of the city. Following successful implementations in cities like London and Milan, the charge aims to relieve gridlock, encourage public transport, and cut down greenhouse gas emissions. Motorists will have to pay a fee during peak hours, starting at 40 to 50 baht per vehicle, expected to increase every five years to reach 80 baht per vehicle. The initiative is projected to generate around 10 billion baht annually, with funds helping to maintain a 20-baht fare cap on certain train services. Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit backs the move, hoping it will lead to less congestion and cleaner air. According to a 2023 survey by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning (OTP), the congestion charge will target the following areas due to their high traffic volumes: Phetchaburi-Thonglor intersection: 60,112 vehicles daily Silom-Naradhiwas intersection: 62,453 vehicles daily Sathorn-Naradhiwas intersection: 83,368 vehicles daily Pathumwan intersection: 62,453 vehicles daily Ratchaprasong intersection: 56,235 vehicles daily Pratunam intersection: 68,473 vehicles daily For context, after London introduced a congestion charge in 2003, traffic reduced by 15%, bringing in 1.2 billion pounds (about 50.33 billion baht) and cutting carbon emissions by 16%. Milan saw similar benefits in 2012, with a 12% drop in traffic, a 48% increase in public transport use, and a 15% reduction in emissions. Bangkok officials hope to see these positive results in the near future, creating a more sustainable and less congested city. -- 2025-02-10 -

My Thai Tax Office Tax Filing Experience...
I knew they are saying that. Personally I would ignore that if your case is relatively simple and you can easily prove your remittances were non-accessable in the event of audit. They are saying such audits are likely and will cost a fortune and they're doing you a favor by charging you to file such null returns. Does that sound like fear mongering? You decide. I don't see why if you have the records why you even need any help proving that. Everyone is going to have to filter out such issues for themselves. My filter says ignore that advice. Yours may differ. -

Thai tax tangle: Expats warned of new rules on overseas income
Yes ... they might ... and they might not. From the experience of many at the local Thai RD offices (and from the main Bangkok RD help line) there does not read to be much interest in the Thailand RD in going after foreigners to prove such remittance source ... much much much less would be Thai immigration caring whether one has filed a tax return. Who knows? We will just have to wait and see. My view is to follow Thai tax law. Also take note of relevant Minsterial Instructions and of relevant Royal Decrees and of DTAs. Check if legally required to file a tax return noting NOT ALL INCOME is to be considered when evaluating the threshold to file a Thai tax return (in consideration of Royal Decrees, DTAs , and Ministerial directive). i suspect (hope?) with time, there may be superior summary information IN ONE LOCATION with regard to foreign sourced income (taking into account Thai tax code, the country of source income, DTAs, Ministerial Instructions , and Royal Decrees). At present one has to consider all and make an evaluation, as opposed to just one place/document. -
