A crash occurred at around 12:30 on 12 January, when a six-wheel sugar cane truck driver veered off the road and the truck rolled onto the driver’s side, before it collided with a tree on the side of the Khu Muang-Putthaisong Road, near the Ban Pa Subdistrict in Khu Muang District, Buriram.

The Buriram Rescue Centre received an emergency call reporting the crash and dispatched several rescue teams, including units with rescue and cutting tools and a recovery vehicle.

Upon arrival at the scene, rescue teams found the truck lodged against a tree and the cab roof crushed, with the driver trapped inside. The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was unable to exit the vehicle.

Emergency services immediately began using hydraulic cutting equipment to free the victim, a process that took approximately 45 minutes, due to the amount of damaged to the vehicle. At one stage a passing truck was called in to help try and pull the truck away from the tree, using chains, to allow easier access for rescue and medical teams

Throughout extricating the driver from the wreck, rescue workers found him conscious and alert but suffering from abrasions and cuts across his body. Emergency medical personnel provided first aid at the scene before transporting the driver to Khu Muang Hospital for further treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, with initial reports suggesting that the truck driver may have lost control due to excessive speed or possibly due to a mechanical failure.
