I commented on the original, which was from a "based on" - what does that actually mean?) - report in the Independent. The update isn't credited, although it appears to be from the same article I linked to. Oh gawd, read the OP, show me one quote from Trump in it? Anyway, its pretty obvious that Trumps being diplomatic in his latest statement seeing as he's got the not so enviable task of actually having to speak to Starmer on the phone before a trip to the UK.............. 1

Qed. Whichever way it comes out the Starmer haters must have their say. So much posted on here by the same crowd, over and over. If Trump wants to talk to Starmer, how is it, except in your ridiculously biased opinion, a "not so enviable task of actually having to speak to Starmer on the phone"? Now you're Trump's spokesperson right? It's a rare day that Trump is diplomatic, for sure. 1

Simply a snide comment in the face of what could be a refreshing upturn in US/UK relations. But the idea a Labour leader could win praise from DJT? Preposterous, right? 1

spidermike007 Posted January 27 Posted January 27 To think this is coming from a man who claims that he cherishes democracy and constitutional law. First Greenland, then the Panama Canal, now the UK. What will his next ambition be King Trump taking over the world? Trump has already shown his fealty to Xi, by encouraging Rubio to give up on Taiwan. It is likely this clown will soon be dropping the idea of tariffs, in a further show of obedience to Master Xi.

bradiston Posted January 27 Posted January 27 1 minute ago, Bkk Brian said: Its on topic. Yes an IPOS poll what's funny about it? The topic was initially the Trump administration's alleged dislike of Starmer, a feeling matched very closely by the majority of posters here. But it has morphed into Trump's own personal liking for him. Your tossing in poll results about his popularity amongst British voters is not on topic. There are plenty of threads containing such sentiments already. This isn't one of them.

Bkk Brian Posted January 27 Posted January 27 The calm before the storm? After the phone call.............. Sources in London describe the call as "very warm" and "very personal". It appears the big picture, and getting to know each other, was the aim, rather than policy detail. It is, of course, on the policy detail that disagreements loiter. But for now at least there appears to be an effort on both sides to establish a rapport and for each to size the other up – all ahead of a trip to Washington the prime minister is expected to make in the next handful of weeks. Lets see how Lammy is on another trip to Washington if he's also invited........

Trump Mk II certainly seems to be a different kettle of fish from Mk I. It's all very intriguing.

He wasn't alone in that, either. Trump seems to have mellowed in some respects. In others, he's entertainingly hardline.

Now, it seems negotiated settlements are the best way forward, with Colombia, Canada and Mexico, for example. That's his forte, after all. The Art of the Deal, and all that. He does have a flair for talking with leaders others can't get near - Kim, Xi maybe, even Putin. Denmark seems not to be included as yet, but I'm sure he'll get some sort of consensus, which has to include the Greenlanders. What seemed at the outset as totally outlandish claims now appears a distinct possibility. Not in the format he originally proposed, but working towards some sort of an "understanding". How much better than Putin's heavy handed, hot headed, catastrophic invasion of Ukraine! As for the rest of his foreign policy, that has yet to be revealed. He always puts several shots across the bows of his targets prior to engaging in talks. Vietnam, probably the EU, China. It's a clever tactic. Makes people sit up and pay attention.

Not seen anything that confirms your opinions that he's mellowed. Your examples with Canada, Mexico and Columbia, well he was never going to war with them, of course there will be a deal.....lol. He literally just threatened Columbia with 25% tariffs and today they backed down over the flight of immigrants. The art of the deal he's always had.
mogandave Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I think it hilarious the way the guys that hate Trump all worship their dear leader Starmer. 1
